Penta: Family and Team

In Human Design, a Penta is a group of three to five people. The calculator combines the members’ charts and shows who covers each of the group’s 12 functions and which functions are missing.

Group

You need three to five people; empty members are not counted. If you don’t know a time, clear the field: that chart will be calculated for noon. Names are used only as labels.

What is a Penta

According to Ra Uru Hu’s teaching, when three to five people are together — a family, a small team — they merge into a single field with functions of its own. The Penta reads not the whole chart but only the 12 gates and 6 channels between the G Center, the Throat and the Sacral Center. Each gate is a function the group needs: someone sets the direction, someone brings in resources, someone keeps the experience.

ChannelFor businessFor family
1-8the product and how it is presentedthe family’s self-expression
7-31leadershipdirection
13-33experience and recordsmemory and traditions
15-5rhythm and culturerhythm of the home
2-14resources and where they goproviding for the family
46-29commitment to the workopenness to the world

The upper three channels (1-8, 7-31, 13-33) are roles that can be assigned to people. The lower ones (15-5, 2-14, 46-29) are the group’s energy and resources. Gates that nobody has are called gaps: according to the system, that is where the group’s attention and tension go.

How it is calculated

A full chart is built for each member — 26 activations of Personality and Design. For each of the Penta’s 12 gates, the calculator marks who has it; a Penta channel is complete if both of its gates are present somewhere in the group, even in different people. Conscious and unconscious activations count the same.

Schools name the functions differently: the business version (BG5) has its own names, the family version has others, and Russian-language sites use a third set. We use simple names close in meaning. More than five people, according to the teaching, split into several Pentas; the system has a separate form for larger groups, but its rules are kept within paid courses. A simplified calculation for six people or more: Human Design for teams. Separate Penta pages: for business and for families.

An Honest Look at the Method

Human Design is a modern system that Ra Uru Hu described in 1987. Its rules are precisely defined and therefore calculable, but none of them has been tested as a way to describe a person or predict how relationships will turn out. We calculate by the system’s rules and write the interpretations as a description of what the system holds, not as knowledge about you. More on the system’s origins is on the Human Design page.

Frequently asked questions

Why only three to five people?

That is how the teaching puts it: two people are a couple with rules of their own, three to five form a Penta, and more than five, according to Ra, split into several Pentas. For two people there is Human Design compatibility, and for six or more, the team calculation.

Is a gap a bad thing?

According to the system, a gap is a function the group lacks: nobody takes care of it naturally, and tension easily builds up there. It is a reason to agree on it consciously or bring it in from outside, not a verdict on the group.

How does a family Penta differ from a business one?

The gates and channels are the same; only the names of the functions differ: in a family, Gate 13 is memory and the past, in business it is record-keeping; Gate 8 in a family is setting an example, in business it is marketing and public relations.
