1/3 Profile: Investigator/Martyr

The 1/3 profile is a conscious first line and an unconscious third: first figure things out, then test them in practice. About 14% of people have it.

Two lines: Investigator and Martyr

The first number of the profile is the line of the Personality Sun, the conscious side of the chart. In a 1/3 this is the Investigator: the person feels calmer when they understand how a subject works and can rely on verified information. According to the system, the first line's insecurity is resolved through knowledge, not through reassurance.

The second number is the line of the Design Sun, the unconscious side. Here it is the Martyr, who learns by trial and error. The person may see themselves as careful and thorough, while others notice how often they try something, break it and start over. Together the lines form a cycle: study, test in practice, find out what doesn't work, and go back to studying. Both lie in the lower, personal trigram, so the profile is considered focused on one's own experience.

In life, relationships and work

  • In life. Such a person is believed to need a solid foundation: knowledge, clear rules, a secure home and income. Mistakes are not failures for them but a way to check what that foundation rests on.
  • In relationships. According to the system, the third line makes and breaks bonds until it finds the right ones, while the first wants security. Hence the typical contradiction: a longing for certainty and several attempts before it arrives.
  • At work. The profile is described as a hands-on researcher: they know the subject well and know what doesn't work, because they have tested it themselves. They suit tasks that leave room for experiment and time to prepare.

Right Angle Cross

1/3 is one of the seven Right Angle profiles, from 1/3 to 4/6; together they account for about 64% of people. According to the system, a Right Angle Cross is a path of personal destiny: meaning unfolds through the person's own story, and encounters with others matter but do not set the direction. In a 1/3 both lines are personal, and the path is shaped above all by their own research and trials. An example of such a cross in a chart is the “Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx”: its theme comes from the gates of the Personality and Design Sun and Earth, while the profile only sets the angle. Harmonic lines

The system considers the line pairs 1–4, 2–5 and 3–6 harmonic. For a 1/3 these are the fourth line (the pair to the first) and the sixth (the pair to the third). The 4/6 profile has both at once, in the same order; we call it the mirror profile. Harmonic and shared lines are believed to ease mutual understanding, but they make a couple neither good nor bad. The system examines the relationship as a whole in Human Design compatibility.

How to read this

This is a description of the 1/3 profile according to the rules of the system, not an established fact: there is no research linking the line of the Sun to character or destiny. According to the system, the profile is read after Type, Strategy and Authority. You can calculate your own chart with the Human Design calculator, and the other profiles are described in the profiles overview.
