Ascendant Calculator
The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It describes your appearance, your manner and the first impression you make. The calculator finds your Ascendant to the nearest arcminute, shows your chart ruler and the planets in your first house, and gives a full interpretation.
You need your date, time and place of birth. If you don't know the time, tick the box: the calculator will show which signs were rising on that day. Latitude, longitude and UTC offset are only needed if your place is not on the list.
What is the Ascendant
The Ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It is the start of the first house and the most personal point in the chart: it describes your appearance, your manner, your first reaction to anything new and how people see you when they first meet you.
Your Sun sign answers the question "who am I", your Ascendant answers "how do I show it". That is why two people with the same Sun sign but different Ascendants make completely different impressions.
The planet that rules the Ascendant sign is called the chart ruler: its sign and house show where your personal energy is directed. Opposite the Ascendant lies the Descendant — the start of the seventh house, the point of partnership.
What you get
- The sign and degree of your Ascendant, with its decan and a warning if it is close to a sign boundary.
- A full interpretation: appearance, manner, how others see you, strengths and traps.
- The element and modality of your Ascendant.
- The chart ruler: which sign and house it is in and what that means.
- Planets in the first house and the Descendant — the kind of partner you look for.
- A table of planets in signs and houses, plus the Midheaven (MC).
How the Ascendant is calculated
The birth time is converted to Universal Time, taking into account the historical time zone and daylight saving time of the birthplace. From it, the true sidereal time at Greenwich is calculated, and the longitude of the place is added to get local sidereal time. From that, the latitude of the place and the obliquity of the ecliptic, a spherical trigonometry formula gives the point of the ecliptic on the eastern horizon.
Planetary positions use the same formulas as our Jyotish and Human Design calculators: the Sun by VSOP87, the Moon by Meeus's theory, the outer planets by the Swiss Ephemeris. The zodiac is tropical and houses are Placidus (above the Arctic Circle, where Placidus cannot be constructed, Porphyry). Checked against the Swiss Ephemeris on hundreds of dates from 1900 to 2100: the Ascendant and house cusps are accurate to within 6 arcseconds.
The Ascendant in every sign
Aries Ascendant
An Aries Ascendant gives quick movements, a direct gaze and noticeable energy: such a person enters a room as if in a hurry to get somewhere. Often there are expressive brows, a scar or mole on the face or head, an athletic build and a determined chin. The voice is loud and the stride fast.
People see you as a fighter and an initiator: the first to speak, the first to act and the first to stand up for someone. You are considered brave and honest, sometimes blunt and impatient. The first impression forms within seconds, and you rarely come across as wishy-washy.
You charge into anything new: act first, sort things out later. This is how you meet life — as a challenge. You feel best where you can start from scratch and worst where you have to wait a long time for permission.
Your strength is courage and a talent for getting things started: projects, conversations, change. You are not afraid of conflict, so you often settle what others put off for years. The trap is reacting before thinking: an outburst you regret an hour later, and a habit of dropping what you started once the excitement fades.
Taurus Ascendant
A Taurus Ascendant gives a calm, solid, "dependable" appearance: soft features, a pleasant voice, a strong neck and unhurried movements. Many people with this Ascendant have a classic, physical beauty and look good in natural fabrics and warm tones.
People see you as steady and dependable: it is calm around you, you do not fuss and do not promise too much. Sometimes you are seen as stubborn and slow. Trust in you grows slowly but lasts a long time.
You approach anything new carefully: first you take a look, test it by touch and only then agree. You need things to be comfortable, tasty and safe. You resist changes imposed from outside — but you see through to the end whatever you have chosen yourself.
Your strength is endurance, practicality and taste: you know how to preserve, save and make things beautiful. The trap is inertia: clinging to the familiar even when it no longer warms you, and mistaking calm for standing still.
Gemini Ascendant
A Gemini Ascendant gives a lively, youthful appearance: an animated face, quick expressions, expressive hands and a light step. These people often look younger than their age and gesture a lot when they talk.
People see you as a conversationalist: curious, witty and quick to get along with others. You grasp the essence fast and can keep a conversation going on any subject. Sometimes you are taken for superficial or fickle — because you have more interests than time.
You approach anything new through questions and information: read up, ask around, compare. Everything interests you at once, and the first steps come easily. The hard part is choosing one thing and staying with it for the long haul.
Your strength is a flexible mind, a way with words and a knack for connecting people and ideas. You excel at learning, writing, translating and negotiating. The trap is scattered attention and nervous strain: too many tabs open at once.
Cancer Ascendant
A Cancer Ascendant gives a soft, rounded appearance: a round face, large expressive eyes and pale or sensitive skin. Your mood shows on your face straight away. Many people with this Ascendant have a soft, cosy, “homely” look.
People see you as warm, caring and a little guarded: cautious at first, then deeply loyal. People want to confide in you, and they trust you. Sometimes you are seen as touchy or moody — your mood really does change, like the Moon.
You approach anything new sideways, like your sign's crab: first you check whether it is safe and whether your kind of people are there. You need to feel at home — and then you open up. Without that, you would rather retreat into your shell.
Your strength is sensitivity, a good memory and the ability to create an atmosphere where people feel at ease. You are wonderful at caring, nurturing, feeding and protecting. The trap is living for other people's needs, nursing grudges and clinging to the past.
Leo Ascendant
A Leo Ascendant gives a striking, "regal" appearance: an upright posture, a proud carriage of the head, thick hair and a warm smile. These people like to dress brightly and know how to wear clothes so that people look at them.
People see you as a leader and a star: generous, warm and confident. You naturally end up at the centre of attention, and it rarely irritates anyone — people have fun around you. Sometimes you are seen as vain or sensitive to criticism.
You step into anything new as if walking onto a stage: in high spirits, eager to show yourself and get a response. You need your contribution to be noticed. Without recognition your energy quickly fades.
Your strength is generosity, creative fire and the ability to inspire. You are a born leader, host, performer or mentor. The trap is depending on applause and feeling hurt when there is none, and pride that keeps you from admitting a mistake.
Virgo Ascendant
A Virgo Ascendant gives a neat, restrained appearance: a slim build, fine regular features and an attentive gaze. These people look well groomed and composed, dress practically and without frills, and often look younger than their age.
People see you as capable, modest and reliable with details: if you take something on, you will do it well. You are valued for being useful and precise. Sometimes you are seen as nitpicky, anxious or a little cold.
You approach anything new through analysis: figure out how it works, what could go wrong, how to make it better. You feel calmer when there is a plan and clear rules. You try to bring order to chaos — which is both a strength and a source of tension.
Your strength is attentiveness, diligence and a talent for improving things. You make an excellent editor, doctor, analyst, craftsperson or assistant. The trap is perfectionism and self-criticism that stop you from finishing and enjoying the result, plus anxiety about your health.
Libra Ascendant
A Libra Ascendant gives a harmonious, attractive appearance: balanced proportions, a pleasant smile, dimples and good taste in clothes. These people are often beautiful in a soft, approachable way and know how to make themselves liked.
People see you as a diplomat: polite, charming and fair. You are easy to be around; you know how to smooth over rough edges and find words that hurt no one. Sometimes you are seen as indecisive or insincere — because you avoid open conflict.
You approach anything new through people: who to do it with, how it will look, who will be pleased. Agreement and beauty matter to you. Decisions are hard — you see that each side has a point.
Your strength is tact, taste and a sense of fairness. You make an excellent partner, mediator, lawyer, designer or negotiator. The trap is adapting to others until you lose yourself, and putting off choices so as not to offend anyone.
Scorpio Ascendant
A Scorpio Ascendant gives a strong, magnetic appearance: a heavy, intent gaze, expressive eyes, dark brows and a certain magnetism. Even in silence, such a person is felt as a "presence". They often prefer dark, concealing clothes.
People see you as strong, guarded and a little dangerous: it is hard to tell what you are thinking. You are respected and slightly feared, and people trust you with secrets. Sometimes you are seen as suspicious, vindictive or jealous.
You approach anything new by testing it first: who is in charge here, what do they want from you, where is the catch? You open up only to those who pass the test — and then completely. Anything superficial bores you.
Your strength is depth, willpower and the ability to withstand crises. You see what is hidden and work well with secrets, finance, psychology, medicine and investigations. The trap is control and mistrust, and an inability to forgive and let go.
Sagittarius Ascendant
A Sagittarius Ascendant gives a tall stature or long legs, an open face, a broad smile and sweeping movements. These people look energetic and friendly and like loose, sporty clothes.
People see you as an optimist, a traveller and a teacher: cheerful, direct and fond of talking about the meaning of life. You are interesting company and fire people up with ideas. Sometimes you are seen as tactless, boastful or promising more than you deliver.
You approach anything new believing it will be interesting: new countries, people and ideas are your element. You need to see meaning and prospects. Routine and petty restrictions weigh you down.
Your strength is optimism, generosity, broad horizons and the ability to inspire. You make an excellent teacher, traveller, lawyer, publisher or advocate of your ideas. The trap is making rash promises, impatience with routine and certainty that you are right.
Sagittarius Ascendant in detail
Capricorn Ascendant
A Capricorn Ascendant gives a stern, reserved appearance: pronounced cheekbones, a bony face, a serious gaze and an upright posture. In youth these people often look older than they are, and with the years younger than their peers. They dress in a classic, understated way.
People see you as serious, responsible and reliable: the adult in any group. You are respected and put in charge. Sometimes you are seen as cold, dry or too strict.
You approach anything new carefully and with a plan: weigh up what it costs, where it leads, who is responsible. You need a goal and clear steps. You are in no hurry, but you climb a long way.
Your strength is discipline, endurance and the ability to build for the long term. You make an excellent manager, administrator, engineer or entrepreneur. The trap is living only for work, not allowing yourself weakness or rest, and confusing love with responsibility.
Aquarius Ascendant
An Aquarius Ascendant gives an unusual, memorable appearance: a high forehead, an open, "detached" gaze and striking details in clothing or hairstyle. These people look a little otherworldly and stand out from the crowd effortlessly.
People see you as an original: friendly, independent, full of unexpected ideas. You are on good terms with everyone but let few people get close. Sometimes you are seen as cold, stubborn or eccentric.
You approach anything new as an explorer: how could this be done differently, better, more fairly? Freedom and like-minded people matter to you. Pressure and demands to be "like everyone else" make you rebel.
Your strength is independent thinking, friendliness and the ability to see the future. You make an excellent inventor, programmer, scientist or community organiser. The trap is emotional detachment and rebelling for the sake of rebelling.
Pisces Ascendant
A Pisces Ascendant gives a soft, "floating" appearance: large, moist or dreamy eyes, delicate features and fluid movements. These people often look defenceless and change with their surroundings, like chameleons.
People see you as kind, gentle and understanding: it is easy to talk to you about intimate things. You are considered creative and sensitive. Sometimes you are seen as absent-minded, indecisive or elusive.
You approach anything new through feeling: what is it like here, what is the atmosphere, what does your intuition say? You adapt easily and blend into your surroundings. Harshness and rudeness hurt you more than they hurt others.
Your strength is empathy, imagination and intuition. You make an excellent artist, musician, psychologist, doctor or helper. The trap is blurred boundaries, escaping difficulties into daydreams and taking on other people's pain.
Element and modality of the Ascendant
Fire Ascendant (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): you meet the world with action and enthusiasm. Your energy is noticeable straight away; you fire others up and catch fire quickly yourself. You need movement, challenge and recognition; boredom is more dangerous to you than fatigue.
Earth Ascendant (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): you meet the world practically and cautiously. People see you as reliable and thorough; you need results you can touch. You accept change slowly, but finish what you start.
Air Ascendant (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): you meet the world through conversation and ideas. People see you as easygoing, sociable and rational; you think and speak first, and feel later. You need people, news and freedom.
Water Ascendant (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): you meet the world through feelings. First you pick up the mood and how people feel about you, and only then decide whether to open up. People see you as sensitive and deep, sometimes guarded.
Cardinal modality (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): you are the initiator. Your first impulse is to start something, change something, take the situation into your own hands. A crisis is a reason for you to act.
Fixed modality (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): you are the stabiliser. You hold your chosen course and are persistent and reliable, but find it hard to change your mind. You are hard to move — and hard to break.
Mutable modality (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): you are the adapter. You adjust easily, see different options and can switch gears. The danger is spreading yourself thin and depending on circumstances.
The Ascendant ruler in the houses
The Ascendant sign determines the chart ruler: Aries and Scorpio — Mars, Taurus and Libra — Venus, Gemini and Virgo — Mercury, Cancer — the Moon, Leo — the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces — Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius — Saturn. The house where the ruler sits shows where your main personal energy goes.
Ruler in the 1st house: your personality is self-contained — you are the main project of your own life. The Ascendant's character is strongly expressed, and you shape circumstances through your will and appearance.
Ruler in the 2nd house: your personal energy flows into money, possessions and self-worth. You express yourself through what you can earn and create, and you need to feel a solid material footing.
Ruler in the 3rd house: life revolves around communication, learning, short trips and your immediate circle — brothers, sisters, neighbours. You come into your own through words, writing and constant movement.
Ruler in the 4th house: your main support is home, family and roots. Much of your character comes from your parents, and with age the wish for a place of your own grows. The second half of life is often brighter than the first.
Ruler in the 5th house: you come into your own through creativity, love, children and play. It is important for you to enjoy life and have something to be proud of; you tend to take more risks than average.
Ruler in the 6th house: your personality shows itself through work, service and looking after your health. You want to be useful, do well what you take on, and depend heavily on routine and your working environment.
Ruler in the 7th house: you come into your own through partnership — marriage, collaboration, contracts. Much in life comes to you through other people; it is important not to dissolve into your partner or hand your destiny over to them.
Ruler in the 8th house: life passes through crises, deep changes and shared resources — other people's money, inheritance, loans. You have great psychological strength and an interest in what is hidden.
Ruler in the 9th house: you are guided by the search for meaning, study, travel and foreign countries. You come into your own as a teacher, researcher or person with a worldview; long journeys change your destiny.
Ruler in the 10th house: your personality is directed towards career, status and public recognition. You want to reach a position, and usually do; what matters is that the goal is your own and not someone else's.
Ruler in the 11th house: you come into your own among friends, like-minded people and communities. Plans for the future and shared causes matter; many opportunities come through acquaintances.
Ruler in the 12th house: part of your personality is hidden even from yourself. Your strength lies in solitude, intuition, spiritual practice and helping others; you work better behind the scenes than in the spotlight.
Planets in the first house
A planet in the first house (close to the Ascendant) adds its own note to your image — sometimes a stronger one than the sign itself.
Sun in the first house. You are noticeable and confident; your willpower and vitality show straight away. Your Sun sign and Ascendant merge into a single image — people see you as you are.
Moon in the first house. Your feelings are written on your face, and your moods are visible to others. You are sensitive, receptive and caring, but outwardly changeable — as if you were slightly different every day.
Mercury in the first house. You come across as clever, quick and talkative. People know you by your words, questions and ideas; you often look younger than your age.
Venus in the first house. Charm, attractiveness and gentleness: people enjoy being around you. Good taste and a love of beautiful things; you know how to make yourself liked and sometimes use it.
Mars in the first house. Energy, drive and competitiveness. You act quickly and directly and readily join a fight; injuries to the head or face and a quick temper are possible.
Jupiter in the first house. Optimism, generosity and a big-hearted nature; people see you as lucky and magnanimous. You carry yourself expansively and stand out; there may be a tendency to take on too much.
Saturn in the first house. Seriousness, restraint and responsibility from a young age. In childhood it was often hard to express yourself, but with the years comes authority, and your looks age more slowly.
Uranus in the first house. Unusualness, independence and sudden turns. You stand out from the crowd and cannot stand restrictions; life can abruptly change direction.
Neptune in the first house. Gentleness, mystery and artistry; people see in you what they want to see. Strong intuition and creative talent, but also blurred boundaries — it is important to remember where you end.
Pluto in the first house. A powerful, sometimes intimidating presence and deep inner strength. Life goes through several "rebirths", and each time you come out of the crisis stronger.

Frequently asked questions
Can you find your Ascendant without a birth time?
No. The Ascendant passes through all 12 signs in a day and changes on average every two hours, and some signs rise in less than an hour. Without a time, the calculator will show which signs were rising on that day and at what hours — sometimes that is enough to recognise yourself in a description.
How accurate does the birth time need to be?
The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. If the calculator says your Ascendant is close to a sign boundary, an error of a few minutes can change the sign — in that case read both descriptions and check your birth time against your documents.
Why does my Ascendant differ from another website?
Most often because of time and place: the time zone, daylight saving time in your birth year, or the coordinates. We take historical time zones from the browser's database and the exact coordinates of the place. The Ascendant sign does not depend on the house system, but the cusps of the other houses do: we use Placidus.
Which matters more — the Ascendant or the Sun sign?
They work on different levels. The Sun is who you strive to be, your essence and will. The Ascendant is how you come across and how people perceive you when you meet. That is why people often "don't seem like their sign": what shows on the outside is the Ascendant.
Does the Ascendant change with age?
The Ascendant sign in a birth chart does not change. But with age people usually master its strengths better, and the Ascendant ruler and the planets in the first house express themselves more fully.
