Sade Sati

Sade Sati is Shani's "seven and a half years": the time when Saturn passes through the three signs around your Moon. It is the best-known period in Jyotish — the one astrologers are asked about most often. The calculator finds all your Sade Satis with exact dates, shows which phase you are in now and explains each phase according to tradition.

Calculation

If you don't know the time, tick the box: the Moon will be calculated for noon. For Sade Sati only the Moon sign matters, so the answer is usually the same without the time. Latitude, longitude and UTC offset are only needed if your city is not on the list; north latitude and east longitude take a plus sign.

What is Sade Sati

Shani (Saturn) is the slowest of the visible grahas: it passes through a sign in about two and a half years and the whole circle in 29.5 years. When Shani approaches the natal Moon, Jyotish speaks of Sade Sati ("saade saat" is Hindi for seven and a half). In Indian astrology the Moon is the mind, the emotions, the mother and everyday well-being, so Shani's pressure on it is felt especially personally.

The period consists of three phases of 2.5 years each:

PhaseWhere Shani isThemes according to tradition
Rising (udaya)12th sign from the Moonexpenses, poor sleep, moves, foreign lands, distancing from the past
Peak (janma Shani)Moon signfatigue, anxiety, responsibility, tests of health and relationships
Setting (asta)2nd sign from the Moonmoney and family, care with your words, consolidating results

Sade Sati is not only hardship. Shani is the graha of karma and justice: it takes away what is superfluous and rewards patient, honest work. Many people build careers and families during Sade Sati that then last for decades.

How to calculate Sade Sati

1. Find your birth Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa). The calculator computes the Moon using Meeus's theory, accurate to better than 0.01°.

2. Mark three signs: the one before, the Moon sign itself and the one after. For example, for the Moon in Vrishchika (Scorpio) these are Tula, Vrishchika and Dhanu.

3. Find the moments when Saturn enters and leaves these signs. The calculator steps through Saturn's position from birth to a hundred years ahead and refines each ingress to the minute; retrograde returns are taken into account.

4. For each ingress, determine the paya — Shani's "foot": which house from the natal Moon the Moon occupies at the moment Saturn enters the sign. 1, 6, 11 — gold; 2, 5, 9 — silver; 3, 7, 10 — copper; 4, 8, 12 — iron.

In the same way, the calculator finds dhaiya: kantaka Shani (the 4th house from the Moon) and ashtama Shani (the 8th house), and also shows Shani's entire transit through the houses from the Moon for the next 30 years.

Sade Sati by Moon sign (upcoming dates)

Saturn entered Meena (Pisces) on 29 March 2025 and will stay there until 3 June 2027 (returning from October 2027 to February 2028), then move through Mesha (Aries). So in 2025–2027 Sade Sati is running for those with the Moon in Kumbha (setting phase), Meena (peak) and Mesha (rising phase), and dhaiya for the Moon in Simha (ashtama) and Dhanu (kantaka). The calculator will show the exact dates for your Moon.

Signs where Shani is strong (Makara and Kumbha, its own; Tula, its exaltation) or friendly (the signs of Budha and Shukra) traditionally soften a phase; the signs of its enemies (Karka, Simha, Vrishchika) and of its debilitation (Mesha) make it heavier.

Traditional remedies

The classical tradition offers upayas — "remedies" to appease Shani. They are described in the Puranas and in temple practice:

  • the mantra "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah" — 108 times on Saturdays;
  • the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and Dasharatha's Shani Stotra;
  • fasting and offerings on Saturdays: black sesame, mustard oil, urad dal, black cloth, iron, shoes;
  • a sesame oil lamp under a peepal tree;
  • serving the elderly and working people, feeding crows and dogs;
  • blue sapphire — only after examining the whole chart, never "just in case".

We present them as part of the culture of Jyotish. No ritual replaces a doctor, a lawyer or sober decisions; be wary of expensive gemstones and rituals recommended as urgent.

An Honest Look at the Method

Sade Sati is part of a living tradition followed by millions of people. There is no verifiable evidence that Saturn's position affects destiny. The calculator honestly computes the astronomy and sets out the tradition's interpretation — treat it as a way to reflect on the cycles of your life.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I am in Sade Sati?

You need your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. Sade Sati lasts while Shani (Saturn) passes through the sign before the Moon, the Moon sign itself and the sign after it. The calculator finds your Moon sign from your date, time and place of birth and shows where Shani is now.

How many times in a lifetime does Sade Sati occur?

Saturn goes around the zodiac in about 29.5 years, so Sade Sati repeats every 27–30 years: usually two or three times in a lifetime, sometimes four.

Why doesn't Sade Sati last exactly seven and a half years?

Saturn moves unevenly and turns retrograde several times a year. It can leave a sign and come back, so the real boundaries shift by months. The calculator shows the actual dates of ingresses and egresses, including returns.

Which phase of Sade Sati is the hardest?

Traditionally, the peak, when Shani transits the Moon sign itself (janma Shani): the Moon governs the mind and emotions, and the pressure is felt most strongly. But much depends on which sign Shani is in and how it is placed in the birth chart.

What are dhaiya and ashtama Shani?

Dhaiya is the "small panoti": two and a half years of Shani in the 4th (kantaka) or 8th (ashtama) house from the Moon. Ashtama Shani is considered the second-hardest Saturn position after the peak of Sade Sati.

Why do the dates differ from Western websites?

Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the signs are shifted by about 24° relative to the tropical ones. Both the Moon sign and Saturn's ingresses come out differently from Western astrology.

What should you do during Sade Sati?

The tradition advises discipline, honest work, a steady routine, caution with finances and Shani upayas: a mantra, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, offerings on Saturdays, serving the elderly and those in need. This is part of the tradition, not a substitute for a doctor or sober decisions.
