Moon Sign Calculator by Date of Birth

The Moon sign describes feelings, habits and what you need for peace of mind — often more accurately than the Sun sign. The calculator finds the Moon's position at the moment of birth to the arcminute, warns you if the Moon changed sign that day and gives a full interpretation.

Calculation

The birth time is optional: the Moon crosses a sign in two to three days. If you don't know the time, tick the box and the calculator will check whether the Moon changed sign that day. With an exact time, the Moon's house is added.

What the Moon Shows in a Horoscope

If the Sun is the will and conscious goals, the Moon is feelings, habits and everything a person does "on autopilot". The Moon sign shows how you experience emotions, what you need to feel safe, how you care for others and how you want to be cared for.

The Moon is linked to the mother and childhood: it describes the atmosphere at home and the image of the mother you carried away with you. In adult life it relates to home, daily life, the body and rest. In a man's chart, the Moon is traditionally also said to describe the image of his wife.

What you get

  • The Moon's sign and degree with its decan; a warning if the Moon changed sign on your birthday.
  • A full interpretation: emotions, needs, mother and childhood, what comforts you.
  • The Moon's strength in the sign — domicile, exaltation, detriment or fall.
  • The Moon's element and modality.
  • The Moon phase at birth — from the New Moon to the Balsamic Moon.
  • The Moon's house and a table of all the planets — if the time is given.

How it is calculated

The Moon's position is calculated using Meeus's full theory (Astronomical Algorithms, ch. 47) with a correction for nutation — the same one used in our Jyotish calculators, but in the tropical zodiac of Western astrology. Checked against the Swiss Ephemeris on hundreds of dates from 1900 to 2100: the difference is under 13 arcseconds.

If the birth time is unknown, the calculator works out the Moon for noon and checks the whole day: at what hour the Moon moved into another sign, if it did.

The Moon in All Signs

Moon in Aries

Emotions. With the Moon in Aries, feelings flare up quickly and die down just as fast. You react instantly: hurt, delight, anger — it all comes out at once. You can't hold emotions in for long and don't like to.

Needs. To feel safe you need the freedom to act and the sense that you are in charge of the situation. Helplessness and waiting wear you out more than a fight does. The best cure for anxiety is movement and a concrete step.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as energetic, decisive, quick-tempered or independent; as a child you may have had to stand up for yourself early. Hence the habit of relying only on yourself.

What comforts you. Action comforts you: sport, a brisk walk, a new task, an argument you can win. Slower comforts — talking about feelings, long hugs — come harder, even though you need them too.

Moon in Aries in detail

Moon in Taurus

Emotions. The Moon in Taurus is one of the calmest and steadiest Moons. Feelings run deep but change slowly; it is hard to throw you off balance, and if someone manages it, you take a long time to settle down.

Needs. To feel safe you need stability, physical comfort and material security: a home of your own, a predictable routine, savings for a rainy day. Sudden changes and an unsettled daily life unsettle you most of all.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as caring, house-proud and reliable — the one who feeds and provides. In childhood, love was expressed through food, things and comfort, and that is still how you understand it.

What comforts you. You find comfort in good food, a warm bath, a soft blanket, a garden, music, touch. It matters to you that things are beautiful and pleasant to the touch. The danger is "eating" your anxiety and hoarding things instead of feelings.

Moon in Taurus in detail

Moon in Gemini

Emotions. With the Moon in Gemini, feelings are lively, changeable and closely tied to thoughts. You first think an emotion through and put it into words, and only then actually feel it. Your mood shifts with the news and the conversations around you.

Needs. To feel at ease you need contact with people, information and variety. Boredom and silence unsettle you more than bustle does. When you can tell someone about your feelings and be understood, the emotion is already half lived through.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as talkative, on the go, busy with many things — or as a little emotionally distant, "living in her head". As a child, it mattered that people talked to you and answered your questions.

What comforts you. You find comfort in talking to a friend, a book, messaging, a new place, an interesting problem for your mind. You can calm down simply by writing down what you feel. The danger is talking a feeling to death without ever actually living through it.

Moon in Gemini in detail

Moon in Cancer

Emotions. The Moon in Cancer is in its domicile, so lunar qualities are fully expressed: deep feelings, a strong memory, sensitivity to other people's moods. You are easily hurt and long remember both slights and kindness.

Needs. To feel safe you need home, family and your own people — those who will accept you no matter what. Without a place of your own and loved ones you feel vulnerable, like a crab without its shell. It matters that others care for you too, not only you for them.

Mother and childhood. Mother is a very important figure: often caring, protective, emotionally close, sometimes too close. The bond with her and with the family history stays strong all your life, whether good or difficult.

What comforts you. You find comfort in home, family, home cooking, old photos, water, looking after someone. A familiar setting helps. The danger is hiding in the past and in old grievances, shutting yourself off from the new.

Moon in Cancer in detail

Moon in Leo

Emotions. With the Moon in Leo, feelings are bright, warm and generous. You experience things dramatically and openly, and it matters to you that your emotions are seen and answered. Pride is strong: you show hurt less often than you feel it.

Needs. To feel at ease you need recognition, love and a sense of being special. It matters to you to be valued, praised and noticed. Indifference hurts more than criticism.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as vivid, proud and creative — someone to be proud of, or someone for whom you had to be "the best". As a child, it mattered to be loved for who you are.

What comforts you. You find comfort in creativity, celebrations, attention from friends, a chance to shine, playing with children. It helps to do something you can be proud of. The danger is demanding admiration as proof of love.

Moon in Leo in detail

Moon in Virgo

Emotions. With the Moon in Virgo, feelings are restrained and analytical. You take emotions apart like a problem: why this, what's wrong, how to fix it. Anxiety runs higher than average, especially when something is out of your control.

Needs. To feel safe you need order, routine and a sense of being useful. You are calmer when things are done, the house is clean and the plan is clear. Chaos and uncertainty throw you off balance.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as practical, neat, demanding or critical; love was expressed through taking care of chores and health rather than through tenderness. Hence the habit of earning love by being useful.

What comforts you. You find comfort in tidying up, a to-do list, working with your hands, looking after your health, helping others. You feel better when you can improve something. The danger is worrying over trifles and criticizing yourself instead of resting.

Moon in Virgo in detail

Moon in Libra

Emotions. With the Moon in Libra, feelings are gentle and directed toward others. You feel good when there is harmony around you and bad when someone is unhappy. You avoid sharp emotions and take conflicts hard.

Needs. To feel at ease you need relationships, beauty and fairness. Being alone is hard for you; it matters to have a partner or a close friend nearby. Rudeness, ugliness and injustice hurt you almost physically.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as beautiful, polite and keen on harmony — or as someone who demanded that you "be good" and not quarrel. Hence the habit of adapting and smoothing things over.

What comforts you. You find comfort in a beautiful place, art, music, pleasant company, a heart-to-heart with someone close. The danger is sacrificing your own feelings for the sake of peace and bottling up unspoken resentment.

Moon in Libra in detail

Moon in Scorpio

Emotions. The Moon in Scorpio is in its fall: feelings are very strong, deep and hidden. You take everything seriously, to the full, and few people see what is going on inside. Attachments are forever, grudges last a long time.

Needs. To feel safe you need complete trust, intimacy and control over the situation. Superficial relationships bring no comfort. Betrayal is the hardest blow; you sense falseness better than anyone.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as strong, domineering, closed off, or as someone who went through hard times; there may have been family secrets. The bond with her is intense — with love, struggle and deep memory.

What comforts you. You find comfort in solitude, a deep conversation with one trusted person, psychology, mysteries, water, passionate pursuits. You recover through total immersion. The danger is jealousy, control and revenge instead of talking.

Moon in Scorpio in detail

Moon in Sagittarius

Emotions. With the Moon in Sagittarius, feelings are optimistic, open and direct. You flare up quickly and cool down quickly, and you don't like to stay sad for long. Emotions are tied to ideas and faith: if there is meaning in it, you can endure a great deal.

Needs. To feel at ease you need freedom, open space and prospects. Cramped spaces, routine and petty control weigh you down. It matters to you to believe that something good lies ahead and to have the option to leave or start something new.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as cheerful, freedom-loving, passionate about ideas, travel or religion — or as often absent. In childhood, honesty and a broad outlook were valued.

What comforts you. You find comfort in the road, nature, outdoor sport, books about the meaning of life, a conversation with a wise person, plans for the future. The danger is running away from difficult feelings into new adventures.

Moon in Sagittarius in detail

Moon in Capricorn

Emotions. The Moon in Capricorn is in its detriment: feelings are restrained, controlled, sometimes almost frozen. You don't show weakness and try to cope on your own. There are more feelings inside than show on the outside.

Needs. To feel safe you need control, responsibility and a solid structure: work, a plan, status, finances. You are calmer when everything is under control and you don't depend on others.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as strict, responsible, hard-working or emotionally reserved; childhood may have been "grown-up", with responsibilities early on. Hence the habit of not asking for help.

What comforts you. You find comfort in work, achievements, order, traditions, nature and mountains. You feel better once the job is done. The danger is burying yourself in work instead of feeling, and seeing rest as weakness.

Moon in Capricorn in detail

Moon in Aquarius

Emotions. With the Moon in Aquarius, feelings are even and a little detached. You look at emotions as if from the outside, analyze them and dislike emotional storms. You are friendly with everyone but let few people get close.

Needs. To feel at ease you need freedom, personal space and like-minded people. It matters to you to be yourself without adapting to others. Too many emotional demands from those close to you make you want to pull away.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as unusual, independent and progressive — or as a bit emotionally cool, more of a "friend" than a caregiver. There may have been abrupt changes in the family.

What comforts you. You find comfort in friends, shared projects, new knowledge, technology, the freedom to do things your own way. The danger is "retreating into your head" when it hurts and dismissing your own feelings.

Moon in Aquarius in detail

Moon in Pisces

Emotions. With the Moon in Pisces, feelings are subtle, deep and permeable. You soak up other people's moods like a sponge and can't always tell your own emotions from theirs. Your compassion is immense, and your boundaries are blurred.

Needs. To feel at ease you need quiet, solitude, dreams and beauty. Rudeness and harshness wound you. It matters to you to feel connected to something greater — art, nature, faith.

Mother and childhood. Mother is often remembered as gentle, sensitive and self-sacrificing — or as elusive, often ill, needing care herself. As a child you may have learned early to guess her feelings.

What comforts you. You find comfort in music, water, sleep, creativity, films, prayer or meditation, helping those who are worse off. The danger is escaping into illusions, TV series and alcohol, and rescuing people who don't want to be rescued.

The Moon's Element and Modality

Fire Moon (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): feelings are hot, quick and open. You find comfort in action, joy and inspiration rather than long conversations. A bad mood passes quickly if you have a goal.

Earth Moon (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): feelings are steady and practical. Security means order, work and material support. You show care through actions and expect the same from others.

Air Moon (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): feelings pass through the mind. You need to discuss, understand and name an emotion. You find comfort in conversation, ideas and people, while emotional storms with no explanation weigh on you.

Water Moon (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feelings are deep, strong and intuitive. You sense others keenly and hold on to experiences for a long time. You need closeness, trust and time alone.

Cardinal Moon: you handle feelings by acting — you change the situation rather than waiting for it to pass.

Fixed Moon: feelings are constant — attachments and grudges last a long time, but you are reliable in relationships.

Mutable Moon: your mood is fluid; you switch gears and adapt easily, but you are also more easily thrown off balance.

Moon Phase at Birth

The phase is the angle between the Moon and the Sun. Following Dane Rudhyar, it is divided into eight parts of 45° each; each describes its own kind of attitude to life.

New Moon (0–45° from the Sun): you are a person of impulse and new beginnings. You act on instinct, often not knowing where the path will lead; life is an experiment. It is important to trust your impulses and not wait for approval.

Crescent (45–90°): you break through, overcoming the inertia of the past. Your energy goes into asserting the new against the familiar; your character is persistent and driven.

First Quarter (90–135°): you are a person of action and crisis. You build, break old forms and readily enter a fight. Your energy shows itself best in difficult tasks.

Gibbous Moon (135–180°): you refine and perfect things. It matters to you to understand what it is all for and to improve it. Your need for meaning and growth is strong.

Full Moon phase (180–225°): the Moon has passed the point of opposition to the Sun and begun to wane. You are a person of relationships and awareness: you see things clearly, as if by the light of the full moon, and seek balance between feelings and will, between opposites.

Disseminating Moon (225–270°): you share what you have understood. You teach, tell, spread ideas; it matters that your experience benefits others.

Last Quarter (270–315°): you are a person of reassessment. You revise your beliefs, drop what has outlived its use and often swim against the current. Inner crisis is your engine of growth.

Balsamic Moon (315–360°): you complete a cycle. Strong intuition, a sense of destiny, a focus on the future; often a feeling that you are here with a special purpose. It is important to let go of the past and to withdraw into solitude to recharge.

The Moon in the Houses

The Moon's house is the area of life where you look for emotional support and where your mood changes the most. The house requires an exact birth time. More about each area of life in the Astrological Houses section.

1st house: feelings are on display, and your mood shows in your face and behavior. You are sensitive and receptive, respond easily to the people around you, and your appearance and sense of self change with your mood.

2nd house: security means money and possessions. Income and spending rise and fall with your mood; calm comes when you have something put aside.

3rd house: emotions live in communication. You need conversations, messages, trips; brothers, sisters and neighbors matter for your peace of mind.

4th house: the Moon is in its own house, and home and family become the center of emotional life. A strong bond with the mother and with one's roots, a need for a home of one's own.

5th house: feelings come out in love, creativity and children. You are romantic, love celebrations and play, and are emotionally attached to your children and your creations.

6th house: emotions affect health and work. Calm comes from routine, useful work and looking after your body; stress quickly shows in how you feel physically.

7th house: your emotional support lies in your partner. You look for care and understanding in relationships and depend heavily on your loved one's mood.

8th house: feelings are deep and hidden. You go through emotional crises and rebirths; strong intuition, an interest in psychology and mysteries.

9th house: peace of mind comes from travel, study and a worldview. You are drawn to faraway countries, philosophy and faith.

10th house: emotions are tied to career and reputation. You are in the public eye, working with people and audiences; public opinion means a lot to you.

11th house: your support is friends and like-minded people. It matters to you to feel part of a group, and your dreams are strongly colored by emotion.

12th house: feelings are hidden even from yourself. You need solitude to recharge; strong intuition, compassion and a tendency to care for others quietly.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find my Moon sign if I don't know my birth time?

The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a half days, so on two days out of three the sign stays the same all day and the time isn't needed. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, the calculator tells you at what hour it happened and shows both interpretations.

How is the Moon sign different from the Sun sign?

The Sun is the will, goals and who a person strives to be. The Moon is feelings, habits, the need for security and how a person rests and finds comfort. In close relationships and at home, the Moon sign is often more noticeable than the Sun sign.

Are the Moon sign and the lunar day of birth the same thing?

No. The Moon sign is the Moon's position in the zodiac, while the lunar day is how many days have passed since the new moon. The calculator also shows the Moon phase at birth; the lunar day is in the lunar calendar.

Why is the Moon's degree different from another website?

The Moon moves fast — about half a degree an hour — so the exact time and time zone matter. If no time is given, we calculate for noon, and the degree may be off by 6–7°, but the sign is still shown correctly or with a warning.
