3/5 Profile: Martyr/Heretic

The 3/5 profile is a conscious Martyr and an unconscious Heretic: experience gained through trial and error, watched by others with expectation. About 14% of people have it.

Two lines: Martyr and Heretic

The line of the Personality Sun is the third, the Martyr. The person consciously learns from experience: they try, run into what doesn't work and draw conclusions. According to the system, for the third line mistakes are not failures but the main way of getting to know the world, and its bonds often form and break.

The line of the Design Sun is the fifth, the Heretic. Unconsciously, they raise expectations in others: people see them as someone who will find a way out. Together this makes a strong but tricky combination. Trial and error gives them practical solutions, while other people's projections make those trials public. If an experiment fails, according to the system the blame easily falls on them, even when the mistake wasn't theirs.

In life, relationships and work

  • In life. A 3/5 is believed to go through many changes: of jobs, places, interests. What matters for them is resilience to setbacks and the habit of asking not “who is to blame” but “what have I learned.”
  • In relationships. According to the system, their relationships get tested for strength. They need a partner who sees their experiments as a path to understanding rather than a string of failures, and who doesn't carry an ideal image in their head.
  • At work. The profile is described as someone who quickly finds weak spots and knows what won't work, because they have already tried it. They suit tasks of finding solutions and fixing mistakes, and it pays to protect their reputation by not promising too much.

Right Angle Cross

3/5 is one of the seven Right Angle profiles, from 1/3 to 4/6; together they account for about 64% of people. According to the system, a Right Angle Cross is a path of personal destiny: meaning unfolds through the person's own story, and encounters with others matter but do not set the direction. In a 3/5 the unconscious fifth line brings a lot of other people's expectations into the path, but according to the system it is still the story of their own experience. An example of such a cross in a chart is the “Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix”: its theme comes from the gates of the Personality and Design Sun and Earth, while the profile only sets the angle. Harmonic lines

The system considers the line pairs 1–4, 2–5 and 3–6 harmonic. For a 3/5 these are the sixth line (the pair to the third) and the second (the pair to the fifth). The 6/2 profile has both at once, in the same order; we call it the mirror profile. Harmonic and shared lines are believed to ease mutual understanding, but they make a couple neither good nor bad. The system examines the relationship as a whole in Human Design compatibility.

How to read this

This is a description of the 3/5 profile according to the rules of the system, not an established fact: there is no research linking the line of the Sun to character or destiny. According to the system, the profile is read after Type, Strategy and Authority. You can calculate your own chart with the Human Design calculator, and the other profiles are described in the profiles overview.
