Past Lives by Date of Birth

Who you were in a past life, what you brought with you and what task your soul has chosen now — this is how karmic astrology reads the lunar nodes, Saturn and the 12th house. The calculator works them out from the ephemeris, adds the Vedic view (Ketu in its sign and nakshatra) and the numerological past life number. Your date of birth is enough; a time and place will add the houses.

Calculation

You can leave out the time and place: the signs of the nodes, Saturn and Ketu and the past life number are calculated from the date alone. With a time and place of birth, the houses are added — the 12th house of past lives and the areas of life where your past experience and your present task lie. Latitude, longitude and UTC offset are needed only if the place can't be found in the search.

How Astrology Sees Past Lives

Karmic astrology starts from the idea of reincarnation: the soul comes into a new body carrying the experience of past lives, and that experience is written in the birth chart. The main key to it is the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun.

The South Node (Ketu in Jyotish) is the past: what the soul already knows how to do, what it's used to and where it returns out of habit. It's both a gift and a trap: life on the South Node is easy, but there's no room to grow there.

The North Node (Rahu) is the future: the unfamiliar, difficult and alluring direction the soul came here for. The nodes always stand opposite each other, so the past and the task are two ends of one axis.

Saturn is the planet of karma and time: it shows the debt that will have to be repaid and the lesson that can't be avoided. The 12th house is the house of the hidden, the "house of past lives": planets in it speak of what the soul brought with it unconsciously — fears with no visible cause and secret protection.

How to Calculate Your Past Life by Date of Birth

Step 1. The lunar nodes. The nodes move backward through the zodiac and cross a sign in about a year and a half, so the sign of the South Node depends on the date, not the time. The calculator uses the true node — as most modern karmic astrologers do — and warns you if the mean node is in a different sign.

Step 2. Saturn. It crosses a sign in about two and a half years; everyone born in the same period shares Saturn's sign, but the house is individual.

Step 3. The houses. From the time and place, a grid of Placidus houses is built: you can see which houses the South and North Nodes and Saturn fall in, what sits in the 12th house and which sign is on its cusp.

Step 4. The Vedic view. In Jyotish the past is shown by Ketu. Its sign is taken in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa), and Ketu's nakshatra specifies exactly what experience the soul has brought with it.

Step 5. The past life number. Numerology adds up all the digits of the date of birth and reduces the sum to a single digit. For example, 15.07.1992: 1 + 5 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 34, 3 + 4 = 7 — the past life number is 7. If 13, 14, 16 or 19 appears along the way, that's a karmic debt.

Step 6. The conclusion. An astrologer doesn't read the indicators one by one but brings them together: past experience (the South Node and Ketu), gifts, fears, the task (the North Node) and Saturn's lesson. The calculator's summary is built the same way.

The past life number is calculated the same way as the Life Path Number, but it's read differently: not as the program of this life, but as a role the soul has already played.

An Honest Look at the Method

Reincarnation is a religious idea, not an established fact, and neither astrology nor numerology passes scientific testing. Karmic astrology in its current form took shape in the 20th century: the Western version in the books of Martin Schulman and Jan Spiller, while the Vedic version draws on the classical teaching about Rahu and Ketu.

The positions of the nodes, Saturn and the houses are still calculated precisely — with the same formulas as in professional software. Read the interpretation as a prompt to think about your habits, fears and goals, not as a record of who you really were.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find out about my past life from my date of birth alone?

Yes, the main things — the sign of the South Node, the sign of Ketu, its nakshatra, Saturn and the past life number — depend only on the date. The time and place add the houses: the area of past experience, the 12th house and Saturn's house.

Why are the sign of the South Node and the sign of Ketu different?

Western astrology counts the signs from the vernal equinox point (the tropical zodiac), while Jyotish counts them from the stars (the sidereal zodiac). The difference is currently about 24°, so Ketu often falls one sign earlier. This isn't an error: the two traditions describe two layers of the same story.

How is the true node different from the mean node?

The mean node moves uniformly; the true node takes into account the wobbles of the Moon's orbit and deviates from the mean node by up to a degree and a half. They are almost always in the same sign; if not, the calculator will tell you.

Do people my age get the same result?

The sign of the nodes is the same for everyone born within the same year and a half, and Saturn's sign for everyone born within the same two or three years. What makes the reading individual are the houses, Ketu's nakshatra (it changes roughly every eight months) and the number from your full date of birth.

What should I do with my karmic task?

The tradition advises not to give up the gifts of the South Node but to lean on them while gradually developing the qualities of the North Node: growth happens precisely where things feel unfamiliar.
