5/2 Profile: Heretic/Hermit

The 5/2 profile is a conscious Heretic and an unconscious Hermit: they get called on to solve other people's problems, while they themselves would rather stay on the sidelines. A rare profile, found in about 2% of people.

Two lines: Heretic and Hermit

The conscious line of the Personality Sun is the Heretic. The person knows that others project expectations onto them: they are seen as the one who will help and fix everything. According to the system, it is important for the fifth line to offer practical solutions and to know when to step back.

The unconscious line of the Design Sun is the Hermit. Deep down they need solitude, and they don't notice their natural talents right away — others see them first. The fifth and second lines are harmonic, and in a 5/2 this means the call arises naturally: people see abilities they don't put on display and assume they are ready to share them. They themselves would often rather be left alone.

In life, relationships and work

  • In life. A 5/2 is believed to live in constant tension between the call and the wish to withdraw. It helps them to clearly separate time for others from time for themselves.
  • In relationships. According to the system, they need trust and the chance to be alone without the partner taking offense. It is important that the partner knows the real them, not the image others have formed.
  • At work. The profile is described as someone brought in for a task that calls for their talent. They work best independently, with clear boundaries and no obligation to be in the spotlight all the time.

Left Angle Cross

5/2 belongs to the Left Angle along with 5/1, 6/2 and 6/3; together they account for about 34% of people. According to the system, a Left Angle Cross is transpersonal karma: the path unfolds through encounters with particular people that change both sides. For a 5/2, encounters often begin with someone else's request, and according to the system it is through such encounters that their path unfolds. An example of such a cross in a chart is the “Left Angle Cross of Revolution”: its theme comes from the gates of the Personality and Design Sun and Earth, while the profile only sets the angle. Harmonic lines

The system considers the line pairs 1–4, 2–5 and 3–6 harmonic. For a 5/2 these are the second line (the pair to the fifth) and the fifth (the pair to the second). In other words, the profile's lines are harmonic with each other — this is how all six rare profiles are built. The 2/5 profile has the same lines in reverse order; we call it the mirror profile. Harmonic and shared lines are believed to ease mutual understanding, but they make a couple neither good nor bad. The system examines the relationship as a whole in Human Design compatibility.

How to read this

This is a description of the 5/2 profile according to the rules of the system, not an established fact: there is no research linking the line of the Sun to character or destiny. According to the system, the profile is read after Type, Strategy and Authority. You can calculate your own chart with the Human Design calculator, and the other profiles are described in the profiles overview.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 5/2 profile mean in Human Design?

A conscious fifth line, the Heretic, and an unconscious second, the Hermit. According to the system, such a person is often called on to solve problems, even though they themselves are drawn to solitude.

How is 5/2 different from 5/1?

Both have a conscious fifth line. Unconsciously, a 5/1 relies on research and preparation, a 5/2 on natural talent and solitude. 5/1 occurs in about 14% of people, 5/2 in about 2%.

The 5/2 profile in relationships — what does the system say?

They are believed to need trust and time alone. Relationships are more stable when the partner sees a real person in them rather than someone who has to solve every problem.
