How It Works

The calculation uses two moments: birth and the point when the Sun was 88° of arc earlier — that is 86.6 to 92 days before birth, not exactly 88 days. At each moment 13 points are taken: the Sun, the Earth, both lunar nodes, the Moon and eight planets. Each longitude falls into one of the 64 hexagrams of the wheel — the “gates” — and into one of its six lines.

The gates sit in nine centers. If both gates of a channel are active, the channel is “defined,” and so are both centers at its ends. Depending on which centers are defined and how they are connected, a person is assigned one of the types:

The motors are the Sacral Center, the Heart, the Solar Plexus and the Root Center. Authority is determined in this order: Solar Plexus, Sacral Center, Spleen, Heart, G Center; if only centers above the Throat are defined, the authority is outer (environmental), and for a Reflector it is lunar.

How We Calculate

Planet positions are apparent tropical longitudes. The Sun is calculated with the VSOP87 theory, the Moon with Meeus’s theory, Mercury, Venus and Mars with JPL orbital elements (Mars with corrections), and Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron with tables fitted to the Swiss Ephemeris. The lunar node is the true node. The gate wheel starts with Gate 41 at 2° Aquarius (302° of longitude); each gate spans 5°37′30″ and each line 56′15″.

We checked the calculation against an independent calculation using the Swiss Ephemeris — the same library most Human Design software uses: across 3,000 random dates, type and authority matched in every chart, and all 26 gates with their lines matched in 99 charts out of 100. If your result differs from another site’s, the cause is most often the time or the time zone: the USSR changed its standard (“decree”) time and daylight saving time several times, and the calculator accounts for this using a time zone database.

Why the System Is Popular

It has something astrology lacks: a short, practical set of instructions. “Wait to respond” or “inform before acting” are simple rules of behavior you can try applying today.

The second reason is the division into types with different shares of the population: landing in a rare type (Projector, Reflector) feels like an explanation of why the conventional way of living and working doesn't suit you.

An Honest Look at the Method

The system's origin is well known and not hidden by its followers: Ra Uru Hu said he received it in 1987 on Ibiza from "the Voice," which spoke to him for eight days. It is not a reconstruction of an ancient tradition but the revelation of one specific person, less than forty years old.

Its elements are taken from four unrelated systems, and none of them provides grounds for combining them: the correspondence between the 64 hexagrams and genetic codons that the system cites is a metaphor, not a biological fact.

There are no tests of its effectiveness. The practical benefit that practitioners describe usually comes down to permission to behave in a certain way, for example to rest and not carry other people's work. That permission is useful, but you don't need a bodygraph for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an exact birth time?

For type and authority, accuracy within a couple of hours is usually enough: on roughly two days out of three they stay the same all day. The profile, the Moon’s gates and some channels change within an hour or two, and the Variables within minutes. If you don’t know the time, clear the field: the calculator will show which options are possible on that day and how long each one lasts.

Why is the Design “88 days” earlier?

Not 88 days but 88° of the Sun’s arc. The Sun moves along the ecliptic unevenly, so the gap ranges from 86.6 days (for people born in February) to 92 days (for people born in August). The calculator finds the moment when the Sun was exactly 88° earlier.

Why did another site give me a different type?

First check your birth time and place: calculators handle historical time zones differently. Less often the difference comes from using the mean or the true lunar node, or from a shifted starting point of the gate wheel. We use the true node and start Gate 41 at 302°, as most software does.

How is an undefined center different from an open one?

Neither is colored in. An undefined center has active gates without their partner gate; an open center has none at all. According to the system, an open center absorbs outside influence most strongly, while an undefined one does so through the gates it has.

Is there scientific evidence for Human Design?

No. It is a modern system created in 1987, and nobody has scientifically tested its claims about types and decisions. We calculate precisely by its rules and write the interpretations as a description of the system, not as knowledge about the person.
