Gate 20: The Now
Gate 20, “The Now”, is a gate of the Throat Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channels it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 20
A Throat Center gate tied to being present in the moment. It gives the ability to act and speak here and now; the trap is fussing and acting without understanding why.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Throat Center.
- I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 20, Guan.
- Position on the wheel: from 0°07′30″ Gemini to 5°45′ Gemini.
- The Sun in Gate 20: roughly May 21 to 27 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
- Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 8; after it, gate 16.
The Six Lines of Gate 20
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 20.4.
- Line 1: First Impressions. The first line wants to understand what is happening before speaking about it, but in a hurry it may judge by first impressions. Even a short pause to look into things is thought to help: then its words in the present moment have something to stand on.
- Line 2: A View From Its Own Corner. A person with this line naturally lives in the present but sees it from their own vantage point and may miss the bigger picture. In the system, their ability to be here and now unfolds when they are called on; the trap is taking their view as the only right one.
- Line 3: A Step Forward or Back. The third line understands how to act in the present by watching the consequences of its own steps. It is thought useful for it to look back on what it has lived through: experience suggests when to go further and when to retreat.
- Line 4: A Voice in the Right Place. The fourth line can say the right word at the right time to people who are ready to hear it. In the system, its influence in the present grows through acquaintances and trust; the trap is speaking just to be present when there is really nothing to say.
- Line 5: Answering the Call of the Moment. The fifth line is expected to know how to act right now. It is thought to live up to expectations when it offers a sober, practical solution rather than fine words; otherwise projections quickly give way to reproaches.
- Line 6: Observer of the Present. The sixth line sees the current moment as part of a long story and so rarely fusses. In the system, its calm presence serves as an example for others; the trap is observing so long that the moment for action passes.
Channels
Gate 20 is one half of each of its channels. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.
- Channel 10-20, “Awakening” — its other gate is 10, “Behavior of the Self”, in the G Center. The channel gives the ability to live and express yourself in the present moment while staying yourself. In the system, such a person's behavior reminds others of the right to be themselves without apology.
- Channel 20-34, “Charisma” — its other gate is 34, “Power”, in the Sacral Center. The channel gives the ability to turn energy into action at once and to be very busy. In the system, it is important that this busyness is a response to what truly engages you, not to everything that comes along.
- Channel 20-57, “The Brain Wave” — its other gate is 57, “Intuitive Clarity”, in the Spleen. The channel gives instant intuitive understanding that is put into words in the moment. Such a voice of intuition is thought to speak once and quietly, so it is easy to miss if you don't trust it.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
