Gate 10: Behavior of the Self

Gate 10, “Behavior of the Self”, is a gate of the G Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channels it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 10

A G Center gate tied to self-love and the ability to stay yourself in any circumstances. It gives natural, genuine behavior; the trap is living by other people's models rather than by your own nature.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: G Center.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 10, Lü.
  • Position on the wheel: from 28°15′ Sagittarius to 3°52′30″ Capricorn.
  • The Sun in Gate 10: roughly December 20 to 25 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 11; after it, gate 58.

The Six Lines of Gate 10

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 10.4.

  • Line 1: Simplicity in Behavior. The person carries themselves simply and doesn't adjust their manner to other people's expectations. It is important for them to understand their own nature and the rules they live by — then they calmly go their own way.
  • Line 2: A Level Road Off the Path. The person stays themselves best when they keep a little apart from the bustle and other people's judgments. They have nothing to prove, and over time this independence draws others' attention.
  • Line 3: Treading on the Tiger's Tail. The person tests their behavior in risky situations and sometimes overestimates their strength. Such experience can be unpleasant, but it shows where courage ends and overconfidence begins.
  • Line 4: Caution in a Hard Setting. In a difficult setting the person stays themselves but acts carefully and takes the mood of those around them into account. Support from acquaintances is thought to help them get through a risky stretch without losses.
  • Line 5: Resolve and Vigilance. Others count on this person's firmness, and they can act decisively. It is important for them to keep the risks in mind: other people's projections easily turn decisiveness into grounds for blame if something goes wrong.
  • Line 6: Looking Back on the Road. Over the years the person judges their own behavior by its fruits and sees what did good. Their example shows that being yourself is experience tested by life, not a pose.

Channels

Gate 10 is one half of each of its channels. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 10-20, “Awakening” — its other gate is 20, “The Now”, in the Throat Center. The channel gives the ability to live and express yourself in the present moment while staying yourself. In the system, such a person's behavior reminds others of the right to be themselves without apology.
  • Channel 10-34, “Exploration” — its other gate is 34, “Power”, in the Sacral Center. The channel gives the energy to follow your own convictions and act in your own way. A person with it is thought to persuade by personal example rather than by coaxing, especially when acting from response.
  • Channel 10-57, “Perfected Form” — its other gate is 57, “Intuitive Clarity”, in the Spleen. The channel gives a fine intuitive sense of how to behave in order to stay safe and in good shape. In the system, this is a survival skill through the right behavior at every moment.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
