Gate 58 — Vitality

Gate 58, “Vitality,” is a Root Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 58

A Root Center gate tied to the joy of life and the desire to make things better. It gives energy for perfecting systems and skills; the trap is dissatisfaction when nothing seems good enough.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Root Center.
  • I Ching hexagram: hexagram 58, Dui.
  • Position on the wheel: from 3°52′30″ Capricorn to 9°30′ Capricorn.
  • The Sun in Gate 58: roughly from December 25 to 31 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 10 comes before it, Gate 38 after it.

The Six Lines of Gate 58

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 58.4.

  • Line 1: Joy Without Conditions. The first line finds joy in the very process of learning and improving, without any outside occasion. In the system, its energy is steady when it rests on an understanding of the work; the trap is putting off pleasure until everything is perfect.
  • Line 2: Sincere Pleasure. The second line takes joy naturally and doesn't pretend for others' sake. This sincerity is thought to be infectious and to invite others to work together; the weak spot is temptations that don't match its own taste.
  • Line 3: Joy From Outside. The third line tries different sources of pleasure and learns from experience which of them leave it empty. In the system, it is important for it to tell living energy from the chase for entertainment: a real lift comes from the work.
  • Line 4: Choosing Between Joys. The fourth line often has to choose which activity or circle to give its energy to. Peace is thought to come when it gives up what is superfluous and focuses on what really improves life for it and those close to it.
  • Line 5: Cautious Openness. People project onto the fifth line the ability to fix anything, and others come to it with their problems. In the system, it is important not to trust those who wear down its strength and not to invest in what doesn't want to change.
  • Line 6: Not Dissolving in Fun. The sixth line observes how easily the energy of life drains away into aimless pleasure. Its example is enjoying life fully without handing the wheel to excitement; this way vitality serves improvement rather than scattering in vain.

Channels

Gate 58 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.

  • Channel 18-58 “Judgment” — the partner gate is 18 “Correction” in the Spleen. The channel gives a constant drive to improve what works worse than it could. In the system, criticism here is useful when it is aimed at the task, not at people, and offered in response to a request.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.

An Honest Look at the Method
