Gate 59 — Sexuality
Gate 59, “Sexuality,” is a Sacral Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 59
A Sacral Center gate tied to the energy of getting close and breaking down barriers between people. It gives the capacity for intimacy and reproduction; the trap is getting close without a response or a desire of your own.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Sacral Center.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 59, Huan.
- Position on the wheel: from 0°07′30″ Virgo to 5°45′ Virgo.
- The Sun in Gate 59: roughly from August 23 to 29 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 29 comes before it, Gate 40 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 59
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 59.4.
- Line 1: A Hand Held Out in Time. The first line notices estrangement at its very start and immediately looks for a way to ease it. In the system, its way of getting close rests on understanding what is going on with the other person; the trap is stepping in before the other is ready to open up.
- Line 2: Footing Amid Discord. In moments of discord the second line reaches for what gives it stability and is in no hurry to open up. Reserve is thought not to stand in the way of intimacy: people come to it on their own when they see its reliability.
- Line 3: Letting the Guard Down. The third line learns intimacy by trial: it closes up one moment and opens too wide the next. Over time it finds how to remove inner barriers without losing itself; the trap is confusing openness with giving up its boundaries.
- Line 4: Beyond Its Own Circle. The fourth line is able to step outside a narrow circle and unite people around a shared cause. In the system, by loosening old clan ties it finds a wider community where its warmth is needed more.
- Line 5: A Uniting Call. People project onto the fifth line the ability to melt the ice between people. In the system, its word or gesture can bring a scattered group together; the risk is using its attractiveness for influence rather than for real closeness.
- Line 6: Closeness at a Distance. The sixth line understands when getting close does harm and can keep its distance without resentment. Its example is thought to be warmth that doesn't demand merging: one can walk away from a dangerous bond while keeping respect.
Channels
Gate 59 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 6-59 “Mating” — the partner gate is 6 “Friction” in the Solar Plexus. The channel gives a strong energy for getting close and the ability to quickly break down barriers between people. In the system, it is tied to the emotional wave, so decisions about intimacy are best not made right away.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
