59
Hexagram 59, Huan: “Dispersion,” “Dissolution.” Unity is coming apart, and ties are weakening.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the Kan trigram (water), above is Xun (wind). Wind over water: the wind drives the water and scatters it — an image of falling apart.
General meaning
The answer: right now everything is falling apart, and that calls for a response. Huan describes disunity — in a family, in a team, within a person. The classic text offers a remedy: a shared task, a ritual, a gathering — something that binds people together again. Tellingly, in ancient times this was a rite and a sacrifice, that is, a visible shared act.
In love and at work
In relationships: estrangement, diverging interests, everyone for themselves. At work: a team with no shared goal, blurred responsibilities, people leaving. For keeping things “as they are,” the answer is no.
What to do
Come up with one shared task and do it together this week. Connection is restored by action, not by talking about connection.
