64 hexagrams

The 64 hexagrams of the Book of Changes in the King Wen sequence: number, Chinese name and what each hexagram is about. Open any of them to find the image, the general meaning, the love and career answers, and advice.

How the list is organized

The numbering is traditional, the same as in the book itself: it is neither alphabetical nor based on the structure of the lines. The hexagrams come in pairs: 1 and 2, 11 and 12, 63 and 64 are opposites, and it helps to read them together.

Each hexagram is made of two trigrams: the lower one describes the inner side and what is yours, the upper one the outer side and circumstances. That is where images like “water over fire” come from.

The hexagrams people look up most often for questions about others

For relationship questions, people most often look up 31 “Interaction,” 37 “The Family,” 54 “The Marrying Maiden” and 61 “Inner Truth.” For questions about conflict: 6 “Conflict” and 38 “Discord.”

Traditionally the hardest are 29 “The Abyss,” 47 “Exhaustion” and 23 “Splitting Apart.” The most favorable are 11 “Peace,” 14 “Great Possession” and 15 “Modesty.”

How to find your hexagram

If you have already tossed the coins, count the lines from the bottom up and look up the number by structure. If not, toss the coins in the calculator: it will work out the number itself and show the transformation.
