Hexagram 16, Yu — “Enthusiasm,” “Ease.” It is about an upswing that carries others along.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the trigram Kun (earth), above is Zhen (thunder). Thunder over earth: the thunderclap rolls across the land and rouses everyone — an image of enthusiasm.
General meaning
The answer is favorable, with a caveat. Yu describes enthusiasm, music, shared momentum: when people gladly follow the one who called them. The hexagram's weakness is its lightness: the upswing can fall apart as quickly as it arose if there's no structure behind it. The classical commentary links Yu with ritual and music — that is, with a form that holds the impulse in place.
In love and at work
In relationships — falling in love, celebration, lightness; serious promises are easier to make right now than to keep later. At work — the moment to rally the team, to start, to present. For a long, monotonous task the hexagram is bad.
What to do
Use the upswing today, and work out who will sustain it next week, and how.
