Li
Li: a yin line between two yang lines. Fire, the middle daughter, south.
Symbolism
Li literally means “clinging”: fire does not exist on its own; it holds on to its fuel. Hence the double meaning — light, clarity and fame, and at the same time dependence.
The emptiness in the middle gives another image: the eye, sight, understanding. Direction: south; season: summer.
In a hexagram
In the lower position, Li means clarity within: you understand the situation. In the upper position, it means publicity, light, fame, and also the fact that people are watching you.
Two Li trigrams make hexagram 30, “Radiance.”
In feng shui
The south sector governs reputation and recognition. Kua number 9 belongs to Li. Fire in this sector is strengthened, and water is avoided.
