Domino Divination
Domino divination: one to three tiles are drawn from a face-down set and the meaning of each is read. There are 28 tiles in all, each with its own interpretation — unlike dice divination, where only the total matters. The calculator below draws three tiles without repeats.
How the reading is done
The set of 28 tiles is laid face down, shuffled, and tiles are drawn without looking.
- One tile — an answer to a specific question.
- Three tiles — the present, the near future, the outcome. The most common option.
- Never draw more than three at a time. This is the only rule repeated in every collection.
Other traditional caveats: don't read on Mondays and Fridays, don't read twice in one day, don't ask about different matters on the same day. They don't affect the result, but they set the ritual, and in divination the ritual is the point.
How to read the tiles
The meaning is determined by the pair of numbers, not by their total. Doubles — tiles with identical halves — are considered stronger: there are seven of them out of twenty-eight, and they intensify their meaning.
The most favorable tiles: 6–6 complete success, 2–2 a happy union, 1–1 agreement, 6–1 a quick resolution.
The most unfavorable: 0–0 emptiness and failure, 4–2 deception, 4–6 a lawsuit, 0–3 a quarrel.
A zero on a tile (a “blank”) often shifts the theme to another person: 0–1 is a stranger with news and a request for help, 0–5 someone else’s trouble in which your support is needed. 0–0 means an empty undertaking that comes to nothing. The other tiles with a blank are read by their own meaning, without softening: 0–2 is a lucky journey and a chance meeting, 0–3 a quarrel and jealousy, 0–4 an unpleasant secret, 0–6 gossip.
Probabilities
The chance of drawing a specific tile from a full set is 1 in 28, about 3.6%. The chance of drawing any double is 7 in 28, or 25%. The chance of drawing a tile with a zero is also 7 in 28.
A three-tile reading has no repeats, so the probability of getting at least one double among the three is about 59%: that's 1 − C(21,3)/C(28,3). It's useful to know: the "strong" tiles will come up more often than it seems.
What's in this section
28 dominoes with meanings — the meaning, the reading for love and for work, and the tile's place in the set.
Where the method comes from
Dominoes appeared in China in the 12th century and reached Europe in the 18th, where they quickly found their way into fortune-telling books — the same ones that gave us the interpretations of playing cards and dice. That's why the set of meanings here is so everyday: a letter, a wedding, a journey, gossip.
The method has no predictive power: drawing a tile is a random event with equal odds. But the interpretations are compact and concrete, and that's their practical value: 28 short phrases are easy to keep in your head.
