Three-Card Spread
The three-card spread is the most widely used in tarot. The classic layout: past, present, future. It works well when a situation is already unfolding and you need to understand where it is going.
Spread Positions
| Position | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| First | Past: what led to the situation |
| Second | Present: what is happening now |
| Third | Future: where the current course of events is leading |
The third position is not a verdict. Traditionally it is read as a continuation of the current line: if nothing changes, this is how it will go.
Other three-card layouts
The same three cards can be laid out in other ways, depending on the question.
- Situation, obstacle, advice. The best option for the question “what should I do.”
- You, your partner, the relationship. For questions about a couple.
- Pros, cons, outcome. For a decision that needs weighing.
Choose the layout before you draw the cards, not after: fitting the positions to what came up is the same self-deception as re-drawing.
How to read three cards together
The main rule: the three cards are read as one phrase, not as three separate sentences.
First look at the cards together: suits, Major Arcana, orientation. Then read each one in its position. Then put them together into one coherent answer. If the answer does not come together, the problem is usually the question: it was too broad.
