Xun

Xun has a yin line at the bottom and two yang lines above it. Wind, the eldest daughter, wood, southeast.

Symbolism

Soft below and firm above gives the image of wind and, at the same time, of wood: something that penetrates gradually rather than by force. Wind gets into every crack, a root splits stone — both pictures say the same thing.

Direction: southeast; season: late spring. Xun is associated with influence, persuasive speech and gradualness.

In a hexagram

As the lower trigram, Xun means inner softness and flexibility, a readiness to adapt. As the upper trigram, it stands for circumstances that act indirectly: rumors, moods, slow pressure.

Two Xun trigrams make hexagram 57, “The Penetrating.”

In feng shui

The southeast sector governs money and growth. Kua number 4 belongs to Xun. The element is the same as Zhen’s, but its nature is gentler: not a strike, but sprouting.
