14
Hexagram 14, Da You — “Great Possession,” “Possession in Great Measure.” It is about what you already have, not what you still need to obtain.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the trigram Qian (heaven), above is Li (fire). Fire over heaven: the light is raised high and seen by all — an image of possession and recognition.
General meaning
The answer is favorable. Da You describes abundance, recognition, access to resources — and raises the question of managing all this rather than acquiring it. The classical commentary warns of the main risk: what you possess begins to possess you; that is why the hexagram advises sharing and not keeping everything under your own control.
In love and at work
In relationships — generosity, a warm and open time, often with one partner having noticeably more resources. At work — success, growth, a strong position; a promotion, expansion, or a public offer is appropriate. For asking for help the hexagram is weak: you are the one expected to help.
What to do
Make use of what you already have, and give part of it away. In this situation, possession holds only through movement.
