15
Hexagram 15, Qian — “Modesty,” “Humility.” It is about strength that isn't put on display.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the trigram Gen (mountain), above is Kun (earth). Earth over the mountain: the mountain stands below ground level — something great that doesn't push itself forward.
General meaning
The answer is favorable and rarely anything else: this is one of the few hexagrams with no warnings at all. Modesty here is not weakness but an exact measure: don't overstate your own merits, don't understate others', keep below your real level. The classical text states that in such a position every obstacle can be overcome.
In love and at work
In relationships — a concession that strengthens rather than humiliates; a good sign for reconciliation. At work — a time to do the work, not to report on it; recognition will come later and by itself. To the question of whether to make yourself loudly known, the answer is no.
What to do
Take a step back in the conversation about merit and a step forward in the work itself. That is exactly what works right now.
