64
Hexagram 64, Wei Ji: “Before Completion.” The last hexagram of the book: order has not been reached, and everything is still possible.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the Kan trigram (water), above is Li (fire). Fire over water: fire on top, water below — everything is mixed up, and the elements do not interact.
General meaning
The answer: the matter is not finished, and the outcome depends on care. Wei Ji describes a disorder in which the elements are all there but not in their places. The hexagram does not forbid movement: the classic image is a fox crossing a river on the ice, which must place its paws very precisely. Being in between is natural; failure comes from impatience on the last stretch.
In love and at work
In relationships: incompleteness, an undefined status, “neither yes nor no”; clarity will come, but not today. At work: a project halfway done, an unfinished deal, a transition period. For reporting results, it is too early.
What to do
Walk the last stretch slowly and carefully. Not being ready yet is not a failure but a stage — and the book ends precisely on it.
