Hexagram 1, Qian, is translated as “The Creative” or “Heaven.” It is the only hexagram made of six yang lines: pure creative energy at the very start of action.

The image of the hexagram

The hexagram is made of two identical Qian trigrams (heaven). Six solid lines — pure living force without admixture, movement that has not yet met any obstacle.

General meaning

The answer is favorable, but with a condition: the strength is there, but it has no form yet. Qian speaks of a plan that is only beginning to unfold, of a person with enough resources for a big undertaking. The danger here lies not in outside opposition but in the excess itself: six yang lines easily turn into their opposite, which is why the classical commentary warns of the “arrogant dragon” that has flown too high.

In love and at work

In relationships — strong attraction and initiative, most often on the part of the person asking. For a long-standing couple, the hexagram is a reminder that pressure without sensitivity wears people out. At work — a good time to start, take responsibility, and make yourself known; for asking for support or protection the hexagram is weak, since it isn't about backing from others.

What to do

Act, but choose one front out of three. Qian gives energy and doesn't give discernment — you'll have to add that yourself.
