3

Hexagram 3, Zhun — “Difficulty at the Beginning.” A sprout pushes up through the soil: there is enough strength, but no direction yet.

The image of the hexagram

Below is the trigram Zhen (thunder), above is Kan (water). Water over thunder: movement has begun, but there is danger above, and the path can't be seen yet.

General meaning

The situation is already underway, but it's going hard, and that's normal for this stage. Zhun doesn't speak of failure: it says that confusion at the start is natural and passes by itself if you don't thrash about. The classical advice is not to go it alone — find a helper, or someone who has been through this before.

In love and at work

In relationships — a beginning with complications: circumstances, other people's opinions, an unclear status. For a couple in crisis the hexagram is encouraging: this is a difficulty of growth, not of ending. At work — a new project where everything is still raw; the main mistakes here come from haste and from trying to scale up right away.

What to do

Narrow the task down to a single next step and find someone to go with you. People climb out of an initial difficulty slowly, and never alone.
