21
Hexagram 21, Shi He — literally “Biting Through.” It is about using force where gentleness hasn't worked.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the trigram Zhen (thunder), above is Li (fire). Fire over thunder: a storm with a flash of lightning — an image of decisive intervention that breaks through an obstacle.
General meaning
The answer: the obstacle will have to be removed directly, and that is justified. Shi He belongs to the only group of hexagrams in which the classical text speaks of punishment and judgment: the hindrance must not be bypassed but removed, named out loud. The condition for success is proportionality: force is applied precisely and to the point; otherwise the hexagram turns into arbitrariness.
In love and at work
In relationships — the need to name the problem directly, a conversation with consequences; keeping quiet no longer works. At work — a dismissal, terminating a contract, a firm demand, a legal step. For reconciliation at any cost, the hexagram won't do.
What to do
Say it directly and once, in proportion to the cause. Dragging it out costs more than cutting through.
