22
Hexagram 22, Bi — “Grace,” “Adornment.” It is about form, finish, and outward impression.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the trigram Li (fire), above is Gen (mountain). Fire beneath the mountain: sunset light on the slope — beauty that adorns but doesn't change the essence.
General meaning
The answer: favorable in small things. Bi says that what succeeds right now is presentation — making things look good, making an impression, showing the matter in the right light. But the hexagram explicitly limits the scale: you can't win a big matter on adornment alone, and it advises against substituting form for content.
In love and at work
In relationships — courtship, rituals, a pleasant surface; not the right moment to test depth. At work — a presentation, design, reputation, publication. For a question about a fundamental decision, the answer is no.
What to do
Work on the form, but don't place big bets on it. A weak matter nicely presented is still weak.
