58
Hexagram 58, Dui: “Joy.” Pleasure, company, lightness.
The image of the hexagram
The hexagram is made of two identical Dui trigrams (lake). Lake over lake: two bowls of water side by side — joy that is shared with another.
General meaning
The answer is favorable. Dui describes the joy of being with others: conversation, celebration, pleasant cooperation, mutual liking. The classic commentary adds a sense of measure: joy rests on firmness inside and gentleness outside, while merriment without a foundation turns into flattery and empty chatter.
In love and at work
In relationships: one of the best hexagrams — ease, enjoying each other’s company, flirting, reconciliation. At work: a good moment for negotiations, teamwork, public speaking. For hard, disciplined work it is weak.
What to do
Say something kind and have the conversation in person. Right now people agree readily.
