51
Hexagram 51, Zhen: “Thunder,” “The Arousing.” A sudden shock that comes from outside.
The image of the hexagram
The hexagram is made of two identical Zhen trigrams (thunder). Thunder over thunder: a double thunderclap, a blow that makes everyone flinch.
General meaning
The answer: something unexpected is coming, and it will shake you up. Zhen describes a shock — news, an event, a break in the usual course of things. The classic text treats this calmly: a thunderstorm is frightening, but it passes, and the wise person, after the first fright, carries on with their own work. The danger lies not in the blow itself but in panic and in rash decisions made in the heat of the moment.
In love and at work
In relationships: a sharp conversation, a sudden confession, an event that changes the picture. At work: urgent news, a layoff, an accident, a surprise inspection. For systematic action the hexagram is bad: plans will shift.
What to do
Get through the first fright and decide nothing in the first twenty-four hours. By the third day the picture will be different.
