44
Hexagram 44, Gou: “Coming to Meet,” “Encounter.” The opposite of hexagram 43: the weak begins to penetrate the strong.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the Xun trigram (wind), above is Qian (heaven). Heaven over wind: a single yin line has appeared at the bottom — something unexpected has begun below.
General meaning
The answer is a warning. Gou speaks of an encounter that seems insignificant but in fact begins to change everything: a new person, a new habit, a small concession. The classic text advises against getting close in a hurry and urges you to notice the process at its start, while it is still a single line. The encounter itself is not evil — the trouble lies in underestimating it.
In love and at work
In relationships: temptation, a new acquaintance, a third party’s influence; plenty of passion, little reliability. At work: a tempting offer with unclear terms, a newcomer who shifts the balance. For long-term commitments, the answer is no.
What to do
Don’t rush to meet it. See where this encounter is leading before you make room for it.
