34
Hexagram 34, Da Zhuang: “The Power of the Great.” Energy has reached its fullness and demands an outlet.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the Qian trigram (heaven), above is Zhen (thunder). Thunder over heaven: a storm in the sky, four yang lines at the bottom — strength on the rise.
General meaning
The answer is favorable for action and dangerous for overconfidence. Da Zhuang describes enough strength to break through an obstacle — and warns that roughness comes at a high price. The classic commentary ties true power to a sense of measure: the strong who take no one into account lose their strength.
In love and at work
In relationships: pressure, passion, a struggle for influence; there is no gentleness in this hexagram. At work: a moment to push ahead, make demands, expand. For delicate negotiations and reconciliation, the timing is wrong.
What to do
Go all out, but pick one goal, and leave the other side a way to agree without being humiliated.
