33
Hexagram 33, Dun: “Retreat.” It is about leaving in time and without losses.
The image of the hexagram
Below is the Gen trigram (mountain), above is Qian (heaven). Heaven over a mountain: the mountain is high, but heaven withdraws higher still — retreat before a superior force.
General meaning
The answer: step back. Dun does not speak of defeat — it speaks of a sensible way out of a position where the forces are unequal, and it stresses that the retreat must be timely and dignified, not panicked. The classic text distinguishes the withdrawal of the strong, who preserve themselves, from the flight of the weak, who lose everything.
In love and at work
In relationships: distance, a pause, sometimes a breakup; trying to hold on here will make the terms worse. At work: leave the project, give up the fight for a position, scale back your presence. For going on the offensive, the answer is no.
What to do
Step back now, calmly and on your own terms. A month from now the terms will be worse.
