Gate 38 — The Fighter
Gate 38, “The Fighter,” is a Root Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 38
A Root Center gate tied to the pressure to fight for what has meaning. It gives persistence and resilience in the face of difficulties; the trap is stubbornness and fighting for the sake of fighting.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Root Center.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 38, Kui.
- Position on the wheel: from 9°30′ Capricorn to 15°07′30″ Capricorn.
- The Sun in Gate 38: roughly from December 31 to January 5 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 58 comes before it, Gate 54 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 38
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 38.4.
- Line 1: Not Chasing What Was Lost. The first line chooses what to fight for only after studying whether it is worth the effort. In the system, much of what was lost comes back by itself if you don't run after it; the trap is wasting strength on opposing people who don't matter.
- Line 2: Meeting in an Unexpected Place. The second line often resolves contradictions not in an open argument but at a chance, informal meeting. Others are thought to notice its ability to reach agreements while bypassing formalities; the trap is avoiding a direct conversation.
- Line 3: A Hard Start, a Steady Finish. In a struggle, the third line first runs into resistance from all sides. In the system, this is its path: through failed starts it learns persistence, and what began with difficulty often ends well.
- Line 4: An Ally in Solitude. Finding itself alone against circumstances, the fourth line finds someone with similar views with whom it can act honestly. Such bonds are thought to be exactly what give it the strength to fight for what has meaning.
- Line 5: Recognizing an Ally Across a Barrier. The fifth line is able to recognize a true ally even when distrust and other people's expectations stand between them. In the system, it is important for it to take the step toward them itself rather than wait for someone to break through to it.
- Line 6: Laying Down Arms. At first the sixth line tends to see an opponent where there is none and prepares for a fight in advance. With experience it learns to look more closely and lay down its arms; its example shows how suspicion gives way to trust.
Channels
Gate 38 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 28-38 “Struggle” — the partner gate is 28 “The Game Player” in the Spleen. The channel gives persistence and a readiness to fight for what gives life meaning. In the system, the main thing here is to choose a worthy goal, otherwise the energy goes into stubbornness for its own sake.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
