Gate 18: Correction

Gate 18, “Correction”, is a gate of the Spleen. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 18

A Spleen gate tied to the ability to spot imperfection and suggest corrections. It gives a critical eye that is useful for improving systems; the trap is constant dissatisfaction with yourself and others.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Spleen.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 18, Gu.
  • Position on the wheel: from 3°52′30″ Libra to 9°30′ Libra.
  • The Sun in Gate 18: roughly September 27 to October 2 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 46; after it, gate 48.

The Six Lines of Gate 18

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 18.4.

  • Line 1: Correcting What Was Inherited. The first line looks for the root of imperfection in what has come down from the past: family habits, old rules, established patterns. Its criticism is thought to be useful when it understands why those rules arose in the first place.
  • Line 2: A Gentle Correction. A person with this line naturally sees what could be improved in close relationships and in the way the household runs. In the system, corrections here are best made carefully and without pressure; the trap is pushing people and expecting them to be perfect.
  • Line 3: Zeal to Correct. The third line learns to correct things in practice and sometimes goes too far. Small regrets after overly harsh criticism are thought to be normal for it: this is how it finds the balance between being useful and being nitpicky.
  • Line 4: Tolerating Flaws. The fourth line values its connections and so tends to turn a blind eye to what should have been fixed long ago. In the system, its path is to name the problem honestly within its circle; otherwise a small flaw eventually becomes awkward for everyone.
  • Line 5: Correction That Is Valued. The fifth line is trusted with the role of the one who will put a neglected matter in order. Its corrections are thought to win recognition when they are practical and respectful toward people; the trap is criticizing everyone indiscriminately and ruining its reputation.
  • Line 6: Free From Nitpicking. Over time the sixth line stops correcting every little thing and chooses its own values over other people's expectations. In the system, its example shows that accepting imperfection can also be a mature form of correction.

Channels

Gate 18 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 18-58, “Judgment” — its other gate is 58, “Vitality”, in the Root Center. The channel gives a constant drive to improve what works worse than it could. In the system, criticism here is useful when it is aimed at the task, not at people, and offered in response to a request.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.

An Honest Look at the Method
