Gate 17: Opinions
Gate 17, “Opinions”, is a gate of the Ajna. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 17
An Ajna gate tied to forming opinions and logical patterns about the future. It gives the ability to organize a thought and show a pattern; the trap is pushing your point of view when no one asked for it.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Ajna.
- I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 17, Sui.
- Position on the wheel: from 3°52′30″ Aries to 9°30′ Aries.
- The Sun in Gate 17: roughly March 24 to 30 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
- Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 25; after it, gate 21.
The Six Lines of Gate 17
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 17.4.
- Line 1: Opinion on Solid Ground. A person with this line builds opinions on facts they have studied and is ready to revise them when the inputs change. Exchanging views with people is thought to strengthen their logic; the trap is clinging to a scheme that life has already disproved.
- Line 2: A Nose for Worthwhile Ideas. The second line naturally senses which ideas deserve attention and which are petty. In the system, this gift unfolds when the person is asked; the trap is wasting a clear mind on side issues and missing what matters.
- Line 3: Opinion Through Experience. Here views take shape through trial: to arrive at a clear position, the person has to give some things up and test others on themselves. Mistaken judgments are thought to be material for understanding for them, not a reason for shame.
- Line 4: An Opinion for the Inner Circle. The fourth line shapes the views of those close to it: acquaintances readily listen to its logic. The trap is turning people's trust into a tool; in the system, the influence lasts as long as sincerity, not calculation, stands behind it.
- Line 5: A Sincere Judgment. People expect a person with this line to have a ready answer on how to arrange the future. Their opinion is thought to be accepted when it is practical and honest; if it serves only their reputation, projections quickly turn into disappointment.
- Line 6: A View From Long Experience. Over time the sixth line stops arguing about trifles and forms opinions tested by the years. In the system, its view is valued for its breadth and loyalty to principles; the trap is withdrawing so far that its judgments lose touch with people.
Channels
Gate 17 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.
- Channel 17-62, “Acceptance” — its other gate is 62, “Details”, in the Throat Center. The channel gives the ability to put ideas in order and build detailed explanations. Such a person's opinions are thought to be valuable when they are asked for, and the details serve the big picture.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
