Gate 16: Skills

Gate 16, “Skills”, is a gate of the Throat Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 16

A Throat Center gate tied to enthusiasm and honing skills through repetition. It gives a drive toward mastery; the trap is taking things on with zeal but without enough practice.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Throat Center.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 16, Yu.
  • Position on the wheel: from 5°45′ Gemini to 11°22′30″ Gemini.
  • The Sun in Gate 16: roughly May 27 to June 1 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 20; after it, gate 35.

The Six Lines of Gate 16

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 16.4.

  • Line 1: Words Before Skill. It is important for the person to master a skill deeply first and only then talk about it. The typical mistake is loudly announcing their abilities when there is no solid practice behind them yet.
  • Line 2: Sober Amid the Excitement. The person doesn't get swept up in the general enthusiasm and calmly goes about their work. Their natural gift is recognizing in time where effort is worth investing and where it isn't, even when others are carried away.
  • Line 3: Looking Beyond Idols. The person learns by looking up to those they admire, and finds out from experience that others' approval is no substitute for their own practice. Delay isn't wise either: time slips away while they wait for a signal from outside.
  • Line 4: An Enthusiasm That Unites. The person's enthusiasm energizes their acquaintances, and people gather around their passion. It is important for them to trust their skill and not doubt those who are ready to share the work with them.
  • Line 5: Under Constant Pressure. This person's skills are constantly judged from outside, and the pressure doesn't let them relax. It takes away easy excitement but makes them hone their mastery rather than rely on inspiration alone.
  • Line 6: Rethinking Enthusiasms. Looking back, the person notices that some of their enthusiasms rested on illusions. What is valuable is that they are ready to honestly reconsider them and keep what is truly worth long practice.

Channels

Gate 16 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 16-48, “The Wavelength” — its other gate is 48, “Depth”, in the Spleen. The channel gives depth and mastery that grow through repetition and practice. In the system, the talent here doesn't unfold at once: it takes enthusiasm and long work on the details.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.

An Honest Look at the Method
