Gate 19: Wanting

Gate 19, “Wanting”, is a gate of the Root Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 19

A Root Center gate tied to sensitivity to basic needs — for food, warmth, belonging. It gives the ability to notice what others lack; the trap is depending on being needed.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Root Center.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 19, Lin.
  • Position on the wheel: from 7°37′30″ Aquarius to 13°15′ Aquarius.
  • The Sun in Gate 19: roughly January 27 to February 2 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 41; after it, gate 13.

The Six Lines of Gate 19

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 19.4.

  • Line 1: Getting Close on Firm Footing. The first line seeks to understand what a sense of belonging rests on: who is nearby and who can be relied on. It is thought to feel calmer getting close to people gradually, once it has found out their needs and its own.
  • Line 2: Natural Sensitivity. A person with this line effortlessly senses what others lack and may not notice it themselves. In the system, people are drawn to them for warmth; it is important to leave time to be alone rather than respond to every need.
  • Line 3: Testing Closeness. The third line learns the limits of closeness through experience: it gets close too easily, drifts apart, tries again. Disappointments are thought to help it tell a real bond from a convenient one; the trap is relaxing and no longer investing in relationships.
  • Line 4: A Community of Its Own. The fourth line finds a sense of belonging in a stable circle of friends, colleagues and neighbors. In the system, both support and opportunities come to it through these people; the trap is losing itself by adapting to the group's expectations.
  • Line 5: Wise Involvement. The fifth line is expected to provide others with what they lack. It is thought to succeed in helping when it soberly assesses what it can really give; the trap is promising everyone everything and then being blamed.
  • Line 6: Generosity Without Strings. Over time the sixth line learns to care for others without tying its own worth to it. In the system, its example is mature generosity: being there when it matters and calmly stepping aside when help is no longer needed.

Channels

Gate 19 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 19-49, “Synthesis” — its other gate is 49, “Principles”, in the Solar Plexus. The channel gives sensitivity to the needs of others and to who belongs and who doesn't. It is thought to be tied to the themes of intimacy, agreements and the principles that relationships rest on.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.

An Honest Look at the Method
