Gate 49 — Principles
Gate 49, “Principles,” is a Solar Plexus gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 49
A Solar Plexus gate tied to principles and reconsidering relationships. It gives the ability to stand up for what matters and change what is outdated; the trap is abruptly rejecting people before your feelings have settled.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Solar Plexus.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 49, Ge.
- Position on the wheel: from 18°52′30″ Aquarius to 24°30′ Aquarius.
- The Sun in Gate 49: roughly from February 7 to 13 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 13 comes before it, Gate 30 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 49
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 49.4.
- Line 1: Reasons First. A person with this line doesn't set out to change the order of things until they are sure the change is truly justified. In the system, their strength lies in patiently checking the reasons; the trap is holding on to the old until the moment has passed.
- Line 2: When the Limit Is Reached. The second line puts up with what doesn't suit it for a long time and doesn't look for reasons to break things off. When the limit really comes, it is thought to change the relationship or the rules calmly and without hesitation.
- Line 3: A Protest Weighed Three Times. The third line learns to change established ways through its own mistakes: a hasty rebellion often turns against it. Experience suggests taking on change only after it has been discussed and checked several times.
- Line 4: Change Through Trust. The fourth line can revise the rules within its circle because people trust it. In the system, its principles are seen as a shared cause; the risk is breaking old ways without making sure those close to it are ready to follow.
- Line 5: The Voice of Reform. People expect a person with the fifth line to lead change and put things in order. They are thought to be believed even before they explain, so it is important to offer a well-thought-out plan and not promise more than the reform can deliver.
- Line 6: Letting the New Take Root. The sixth line understands that after a big change it is not worth starting the next one right away: the new order needs time. Its authority rests on living by its own principles without forcing anyone.
Channels
Gate 49 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 19-49 “Synthesis” — the partner gate is 19 “Wanting” in the Root Center. The channel gives sensitivity to the needs of others and to who belongs and who doesn't. It is thought to be tied to the themes of intimacy, agreements and the principles that relationships rest on.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
