Gate 13: The Listener
Gate 13, “The Listener”, is a gate of the G Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 13
A G Center gate tied to the ability to listen to other people's stories and keep them. People find it easy to open up to such a person; in the system, this experience adds up over time to an understanding of general patterns.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: G Center.
- I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 13, Tong Ren.
- Position on the wheel: from 13°15′ Aquarius to 18°52′30″ Aquarius.
- The Sun in Gate 13: roughly February 2 to 7 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
- Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 19; after it, gate 49.
The Six Lines of Gate 13
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 13.4.
- Line 1: Open at the Threshold. The person listens to everyone without prejudice and gathers stories as material for understanding. It is important for them to rely on what they have heard, not on ready-made conclusions about people.
- Line 2: A Narrow Circle of Trust. The person opens up to and listens more readily to those they consider their own. The flip side is closing up among similar people and no longer hearing stories that don't fit their usual view.
- Line 3: A Wary Listener. The person gets to know people through experience, disappointments included, and at first listens warily. It is important that caution doesn't turn into a habit of looking for a hidden catch in everyone.
- Line 4: Stopping at the Wall. In a dispute within their circle, the person realizes in time that force will achieve nothing and chooses reconciliation. This is thought to be how they keep the connections through which new stories come to them.
- Line 5: Tears, Then Laughter. People come to this person with their troubles, seeing them as someone who will listen and help. Their strength is going through a hard period with people until tension gives way to relief, without promising quick solutions.
- Line 6: Fellowship at a Distance. Over the years the person listens to many but keeps a slight distance. They can see what is common to different stories and don't regret that complete unity with people never happens.
Channels
Gate 13 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.
- Channel 13-33, “The Prodigal” — its other gate is 33, “Privacy”, in the Throat Center. The channel gives the ability to gather experience, observe and then reflect on what has been lived through. A person with it is thought to need time alone to draw the lesson and share it.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
