Gate 12: Caution
Gate 12, “Caution”, is a gate of the Throat Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 12
A Throat Center gate tied to expressing subtle feelings and moods. It gives eloquence when the mood is right; at other times, restraint and waiting are appropriate.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Throat Center.
- I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 12, Pi.
- Position on the wheel: from 22°37′30″ Gemini to 28°15′ Gemini.
- The Sun in Gate 12: roughly June 13 to 19 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
- Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 45; after it, gate 15.
The Six Lines of Gate 12
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 12.4.
- Line 1: Waiting It Out With Kindred Spirits. When the situation is unfavorable, the person prefers to stay silent and keep close to those who share their views. It is important for them to study the situation before choosing words for their feelings.
- Line 2: No Trading Away Principles. In stagnant times the person holds their position and doesn't tailor their words to other people's expectations. Solitude helps them wait out a period when it is still too early to express themselves.
- Line 3: Awkward Words. The person tries to express their feelings and sometimes says the wrong thing or speaks at the wrong time, and then feels awkward. Through such trials they learn to sense when a word will really hit the mark.
- Line 4: Words With Backing. The person decides to speak when they feel that something more than personal opinion stands behind their words. Such statements are considered appropriate when addressed to people who already trust them.
- Line 5: Sober in the Moment of Success. People hope this person will be the voice that expresses the general mood and helps break out of stagnation. What saves them is a sober readiness for failure: it keeps them from big words with nothing behind them.
- Line 6: The End of the Lull. Having lived through more than one period of silence, the person knows that stagnation passes and can help others endure it. Their word is especially valuable when the time of change arrives and what is said finally finds a response.
Channels
Gate 12 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.
- Channel 12-22, “Openness” — its other gate is 22, “Openness”, in the Solar Plexus. The channel gives emotional expressiveness and sensitivity to mood. In the system, such a person's words deeply move others, but they land better when the person is in the right mood and others are ready to listen.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
