Gate 22: Openness

Gate 22, “Openness”, is a gate of the Solar Plexus. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 22

A Solar Plexus gate tied to emotional openness and charm. It gives grace in social contact when the mood allows; at other times it is fine to calmly decline contact.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Solar Plexus.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 22, Bi.
  • Position on the wheel: from 17°00′ Pisces to 22°37′30″ Pisces.
  • The Sun in Gate 22: roughly March 7 to 13 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 63; after it, gate 36.

The Six Lines of Gate 22

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 22.4.

  • Line 1: Modest Grace. The first line prefers simplicity to showy brilliance and wants to understand first how social contact works. Its charm is thought to rest on naturalness; the trap is being shy about its place and not daring to step out among people.
  • Line 2: Natural Charm. A person with this line draws people with the way they carry themselves without even noticing it. In the system, their openness is beautiful when there is substance behind it; the trap is paying more attention to form than to essence.
  • Line 3: Charm Put to the Test. The third line tests the power of its charm in practice and is sometimes carried away by a pleasant atmosphere. It is thought important for it to stay consistent: charm without a foundation fades, and experience shows where openness is truly fitting.
  • Line 4: Getting Close in Its Own Time. The fourth line opens up to people in its circle when it senses the right moment. In the system, it is better for it not to rush closeness and to choose simplicity over effect: a sincere gesture at the right time works more strongly.
  • Line 5: A Modest but Honest Gift. The fifth line is expected to make beautiful gestures and have impeccable manners. It is thought better for it to offer little but sincerely: modesty may at first look like poverty, but in the end it inspires more trust than showy generosity.
  • Line 6: Simplicity as Grace. Over time the sixth line gives up embellishment and arrives at natural openness. In the system, its example shows that real charm needs no special effects; what matters is honestly sensing when it wants company and when it doesn't.

Channels

Gate 22 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 12-22, “Openness” — its other gate is 12, “Caution”, in the Throat Center. The channel gives emotional expressiveness and sensitivity to mood. In the system, such a person's words deeply move others, but they land better when the person is in the right mood and others are ready to listen.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
