Gate 23: Assimilation

Gate 23, “Assimilation”, is a gate of the Throat Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 23

A Throat Center gate tied to the ability to put individual knowing into simple words. It gives the ability to simplify the complex; the trap is being misunderstood when speaking without an invitation.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Throat Center.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 23, Bo.
  • Position on the wheel: from 18°52′30″ Taurus to 24°30′ Taurus.
  • The Sun in Gate 23: roughly May 9 to 15 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 2; after it, gate 8.

The Six Lines of Gate 23

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 23.4.

  • Line 1: Knowledge With a Foundation. The first line wants its unusual ideas to rest on a tested basis. On shaky ground, explanations are thought to fall apart; the trap is insistently trying to convince those who didn't ask and aren't ready to listen.
  • Line 2: Protective Silence. A person with this line sees what is not obvious but is in no hurry to share until asked. In the system, this protects them from being misunderstood; the trap is closing up so much that valuable knowledge never gets voiced.
  • Line 3: Parting Ways With the Majority. The third line learns from experience that its view doesn't match the majority's, and sometimes parts ways with the group. Such breaks are thought to be natural for it: through them it finds how to say its piece simply and without defiance.
  • Line 4: Explaining to Its Own People. The fourth line shares original thoughts first of all with close acquaintances. In the system, it is important for it not to break an idea into contradictory pieces to suit everyone: if the explanation falls apart, trust is lost too.
  • Line 5: The Clarity People Await. The fifth line is expected to explain complex things so that everyone understands. It is thought to have influence when it builds its thought clearly and consistently; the trap is getting carried away by originality and losing practical value.
  • Line 6: Knowledge That Endures. Over time the sixth line understands that not every thought needs to be voiced at once: mature understanding waits for its hour. In the system, its explanations become a support when old ideas collapse and people need something new.

Channels

Gate 23 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 23-43, “Structuring” — its other gate is 43, “Insight”, in the Ajna. The channel gives original insights that come suddenly and whole. A person with it is thought to need to explain their ideas in simple words and at the right moment, otherwise they won't be understood.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.

An Honest Look at the Method

Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
