Gate 2: Direction of the Self
Gate 2, “Direction of the Self”, is a gate of the G Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 2
A G Center gate tied to an inner sense of direction in life. It is thought to set the course for others as well; at the same time, putting that course into practice often takes other people's support and resources.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: G Center.
- I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 2, Kun.
- Position on the wheel: from 13°15′ Taurus to 18°52′30″ Taurus.
- The Sun in Gate 2: roughly May 3 to 9 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
- Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 24; after it, gate 23.
The Six Lines of Gate 2
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 2.4.
- Line 1: Sensing the First Signs. The person notices early, from barely perceptible signs, where life is turning. It is important for them to study these signals and rely on them rather than wait until the change becomes obvious to everyone.
- Line 2: A Straight, Whole Course. The inner direction here is simple and clear: the person needs no clever strategies to understand where to go. They think better in solitude, and their confidence is more often seen by others than by themselves.
- Line 3: The Work Over the Credit. The person can work for a long time toward a shared direction without putting themselves forward, and finds the way through trial. The trap is feeling hurt when recognition comes later than the work is finished.
- Line 4: Restraint About Plans. The person reveals their plans only to a few trusted people. This caution protects them, but if they stay silent too long, the support they need to move forward never arrives.
- Line 5: Understated Confidence. Others expect this person to show the way, and their calm, reserved manner inspires trust. It is important for them to offer direction in practical terms and not promise more than they can deliver.
- Line 6: A Guide Without Rivalry. Having walked their path, the person sees the overall course of life and serves as a reference point for others. The trap is starting to compete with those they are meant to support and turning their direction into a struggle for dominance.
Channels
Gate 2 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.
- Channel 2-14, “The Beat” — its other gate is 14, “Power Skills”, in the Sacral Center. The channel connects the direction of life with the resources of the Sacral. It is thought to give the energy to follow your own course and the ability to manage resources when there is a response to the work.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
