Gate 8 — Contribution
Gate 8, “Contribution,” is a Throat Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 8
A Throat Center gate tied to the desire to make your own special contribution to a common cause. It gives the ability to set an example of your own authenticity; the trap is striving to be original at any cost.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Throat Center.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 8, Bi.
- Position on the wheel: from 24°30′ Taurus to 0°07′30″ Gemini.
- The Sun in Gate 8: roughly from May 15 to 21 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 23 comes before it, Gate 20 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 8
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 8.4.
- Line 1: A Solid Base for Contribution. The person's contribution rests on a sincere attitude to the work and a good knowledge of the subject. It is important for them to understand first what they are investing in — then others are more willing to join them too.
- Line 2: Inner Loyalty to the Work. The person makes their contribution quietly, following inner conviction rather than a wish to please. Others notice their authenticity before they themselves dare to show it.
- Line 3: The Wrong Company. The person tries themselves out in different groups and doesn't always find their own people right away. Through such mistakes they learn where their uniqueness is valued and where nobody needs it.
- Line 4: Open Support. The person makes their contribution through acquaintances and doesn't hide whom and what they support. The trap is dissolving so completely in someone else's cause that their own voice can no longer be heard.
- Line 5: Free to Join. People see this person as a center around which others gather. In the system, their strength is not holding anyone by force: those who join their cause are the ones who want to, and this protects their reputation.
- Line 6: Not Missing the Moment. From the height of experience it is easy for the person to observe and put off taking part. The risk is staying on the sidelines too long and missing the time when their contribution would truly be needed.
Channels
Gate 8 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 1-8 “Inspiration” — the partner gate is 1 “Self-Expression” in the G Center. In the system, the channel gives a steady need to express yourself in your own way and to set an example. Such a person is thought to inspire others not with advice but with their authentic style.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
