Gate 41 — Contraction
Gate 41, “Contraction,” is a Root Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 41
A Root Center gate where, in the system, a new cycle of experience begins. It is tied to fantasies and dreams of what that cycle could be like; the trap is expecting reality to match the dream.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Root Center.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 41, Sun.
- Position on the wheel: from 2°00′ Aquarius to 7°37′30″ Aquarius.
- The Sun in Gate 41: roughly from January 22 to 27 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 60 comes before it, Gate 19 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 41
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 41.4.
- Line 1: Helping Without Depleting Itself. The first line is ready to share its strength once its own work is done, but first it estimates how much it can give. Its footing is thought to be a sober assessment of resources, not a dream of how everything will turn out.
- Line 2: Not Shortchanging Itself. The second line supports others without giving up its own dignity and interests. In the system, its plans ripen in silence; the trap is agreeing to ventures that require compromising itself.
- Line 3: Two Instead of Three. The third line learns from experience that at the start of a new cycle pairs work better, and the extra participant drops away. It is thought that whoever walks alone finds a companion, and mistakes in choosing partners are part of its learning.
- Line 4: Less Excess, More Joy. By giving up habits that get in the way and inflated expectations, the fourth line grows closer to its circle. In the system, acquaintances respond more readily to its plans when it doesn't demand that reality match the dream exactly.
- Line 5: A Lucky Turn of Events. The fifth line is thought to often meet support it didn't ask for: people and circumstances line up in its favor. Others expect a lot from it, so it is important not to turn luck into big promises.
- Line 6: Growth at No One's Expense. The sixth line looks for ways in which everyone wins, not someone at another's expense. In the system, with age its plans become shared, and it serves as an example of how to begin something new with care for those around it.
Channels
Gate 41 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 30-41 “Recognition” — the partner gate is 30 “Recognition of Feelings” in the Solar Plexus. The channel gives a strong desire for new experiences and fantasies about what they could be like. In the system, expectations here often diverge from reality, and it is precisely in this gap that experience accumulates.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
