Gate 34: Power

Gate 34, “Power”, is a gate of the Sacral Center. Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channels it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 34

A Sacral Center gate tied to a powerful individual energy for action. It gives a great capacity for work and independence; the trap is constant busyness without direction or response.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Sacral Center.
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 34, Da Zhuang.
  • Position on the wheel: from 0°07′30″ Sagittarius to 5°45′ Sagittarius.
  • The Sun in Gate 34: roughly November 22 to 28 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 14; after it, gate 9.

The Six Lines of Gate 34

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 34.4.

  • Line 1: Strength Without Haste. The first line feels a lot of energy in itself even before it is clear where to direct it. It is thought to need footing in an understanding of the situation; the trap is pushing hard before clarity and a response have appeared.
  • Line 2: A Steady Working Pace. The second line spends its strength economically: it doesn't rush ahead but works calmly and steadily when it has a response to the task. Others notice its capacity for work and invite it into projects; it is important not to take on everything indiscriminately.
  • Line 3: Not Charging Head-On. The third line tests its strength against obstacles and sometimes digs in where it would be easier to go around. In the system, it is exactly these moments of being stuck that teach it to tell a real barrier from one that will give way by itself if not pushed.
  • Line 4: Obstacles Yield to Persistence. The fourth line gets its way gradually: barriers give way to its steady work, and support comes through acquaintances. Its strength is thought to show in constancy rather than in occasional bursts.
  • Line 5: Yielding Without Losing Face. The fifth line can easily give up a fight that has lost its meaning, and this makes its strength look all the more convincing. Decisiveness is expected of it, and its valuable skill is letting go of stubbornness in time and directing energy where there is a response.
  • Line 6: Admitting a Dead End. From experience the sixth line knows how strength leads into a dead end when it pushes without looking around. Over the years it learns to admit a difficulty in time and shows others that stopping can also be a display of strength.

Channels

Gate 34 is one half of each of its channels. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 10-34, “Exploration” — its other gate is 10, “Behavior of the Self”, in the G Center. The channel gives the energy to follow your own convictions and act in your own way. A person with it is thought to persuade by personal example rather than by coaxing, especially when acting from response.
  • Channel 20-34, “Charisma” — its other gate is 20, “The Now”, in the Throat Center. The channel gives the ability to turn energy into action at once and to be very busy. In the system, it is important that this busyness is a response to what truly engages you, not to everything that comes along.
  • Channel 34-57, “Power” — its other gate is 57, “Intuitive Clarity”, in the Spleen. The channel gives powerful energy that instantly connects with an intuitive reaction. In the system, this is the ability to act quickly and precisely when the situation calls for it, while staying in response.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
