Gate 26: The Egoist

Gate 26, “The Egoist”, is a gate of the Heart (Ego). Below you will find what it means in the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to, and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 26

A Heart (Ego) gate tied to the ability to persuade and sell. It gives a talent for presenting an idea to advantage and saving effort; the trap is embellishment and manipulation for the sake of results.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Heart (Ego).
  • I Ching hexagram: Hexagram 26, Da Chu.
  • Position on the wheel: from 17°00′ Sagittarius to 22°37′30″ Sagittarius.
  • The Sun in Gate 26: roughly December 9 to 14 (the dates shift by a day in some years).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: before it, gate 5; after it, gate 11.

The Six Lines of Gate 26

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line specifies how the theme of the gate shows up in a particular person; in a chart it is written after a dot — for example, 26.4.

  • Line 1: Stopping in Time. The first line studies an offer before promoting it and senses when a deal is risky. Its strength is thought to be the ability to turn down a dubious venture; the trap is rushing ahead for a quick gain.
  • Line 2: Restrained Power. A person with this line can persuade without pressure and doesn't waste their talent. In the system, they gather strength until they are called on; the trap is staying idle when the moment to make an offer has already come.
  • Line 3: Persuasion Through Practice. The third line hones its ability to present an idea through its own experience: it tries, makes mistakes, practices again. Regular practice and a clear goal are thought to make it convincing; the trap is mindlessly copying other people's tricks.
  • Line 4: Foresight. The fourth line smooths over rough edges in advance and senses what to offer to whom within its circle. In the system, such foresight benefits everyone; the trap is holding others back more than the situation requires.
  • Line 5: A Roundabout Way. The fifth line is expected to find a profitable way out of a difficult situation. It is thought better for it to act flexibly and remove the cause of the problem rather than fight the consequences; the trap is promising more than can be delivered.
  • Line 6: Influence Without Tricks. Over time the sixth line arrives at a persuasiveness that needs no embellishment. In the system, its authority rests on accumulated experience and honesty, and so people readily listen to its proposals.

Channels

Gate 26 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across the two partners.

  • Channel 26-44, “Surrender” — its other gate is 44, “Alertness”, in the Spleen. The channel gives a sense of other people's needs and the ability to offer what is needed in the right packaging. In the system, this is a talent for persuading and passing on the experience of the past, best used honestly.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
