Gate 44 — Alertness
Gate 44, “Alertness,” is a Spleen gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 44
A Spleen gate tied to an instinct for people and a memory of past experience. It gives the ability to recognize who is right for the job; the trap is projecting old fears onto new people.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Spleen.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 44, Gou.
- Position on the wheel: from 7°37′30″ Scorpio to 13°15′ Scorpio.
- The Sun in Gate 44: roughly from October 31 to November 5 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 28 comes before it, Gate 1 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 44
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 44.4.
- Line 1: Nipping It in the Bud. The first line notices early signs that an acquaintance or a venture may go wrong. Its footing is thought to be the experience of past situations, and it helps to gently stop what is unwanted at the start, while that is still easy.
- Line 2: Not Letting It Past the Door. The second line can keep an unpleasant situation within its own bounds, not letting it affect other people. In the system, others trust its instinct; the trap is silently carrying what would be better spoken about.
- Line 3: Stopping at the Line. The third line is sometimes drawn to dubious connections, but through experience it learns to slow down in time. A clear understanding of the risk is thought to protect it from serious mistakes, even if some awkward moments are unavoidable.
- Line 4: Not Losing Its People. The fourth line relies on its circle of acquaintances, and its instinct for people works as long as it stays in touch with them. In the system, if it drifts away from people, support disappears just when it is needed most.
- Line 5: Letting It Ripen Unnoticed. The fifth line knows how not to force events and to let something good ripen without fuss. Influence on people is expected of it; its strength is thought to lie in tact and patience, not in pushing and direct pressure.
- Line 6: A Boundary Without Barbs. Having seen a lot, the sixth line keeps its distance from those who don't suit it and can respond sharply. In the system, its mature example is declining contact calmly, without carrying old grievances over to new people.
Channels
Gate 44 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 26-44 “Surrender” — the partner gate is 26 “The Egoist” in the Heart (Ego). The channel gives a sense of other people's needs and the ability to offer what is needed in the right packaging. In the system, this is a talent for persuading and passing on the experience of the past, best used honestly.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
