Gate 51 — Shock

Gate 51, “Shock,” is a Heart (Ego) gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 51

A Heart (Ego) gate tied to competition and courage. It gives the ability to meet the unexpected and shake others up; the trap is striving to be first at any cost.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Heart (Ego).
  • I Ching hexagram: hexagram 51, Zhen.
  • Position on the wheel: from 15°07′30″ Aries to 20°45′ Aries.
  • The Sun in Gate 51: roughly from April 5 to 10 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 21 comes before it, Gate 42 after it.

The Six Lines of Gate 51

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 51.4.

  • Line 1: Fright, Then Laughter. The unexpected frightens the first line at first, but it quickly finds footing in it and even a reason to smile. In the system, it helps to understand what exactly happened: a shock that has been made sense of turns into a useful lesson.
  • Line 2: Not Chasing What Was Lost. At a moment of upheaval the second line tends to step back and wait it out on the side. This is thought to be the right move: there is no need to rush to recover what was lost, since much will come back by itself once the storm has settled.
  • Line 3: A Jolt as a Push. The third line lives through many sudden turns and learns to act on them. In the system, the bewilderment after a blow passes if a step is taken right away; the trap is freezing in resentment at fate instead of moving on.
  • Line 4: Thunder in the Swamp. It is hard for the fourth line to show courage when its surroundings don't support it: the impulse gets bogged down in other people's inertia. It is thought worthwhile for it to look for people alongside whom it wants to take risks, rather than drag along those who aren't ready.
  • Line 5: Centered Amid the Blows. The fifth line is expected to stay calm in a crisis and suggest what to do. In the system, it withstands a series of shocks without losing what matters most as long as it keeps doing its work; the risk is putting fearlessness on show.
  • Line 6: Stepping Aside From the Storm. The sixth line sees when competition or other people's panic is drawing everyone in, and knows how to step away. Its example is not joining the general commotion even if it is condemned for it; what matters is not to confuse detachment with indifference.

Channels

Gate 51 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.

  • Channel 25-51 “Initiation” — the partner gate is 25 “Spirit of the Self” in the G Center. The channel gives the courage to go toward the unknown and pass through shocks. Such a person is thought to be the first to live through upheavals and thereby clear the way for others.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
