Gate 4 — Formulization

Gate 4, “Formulization,” is an Ajna gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.

Meaning of Gate 4

An Ajna gate tied to the search for logical answers and formulas. It gives the ability to come up with an explanation quickly; it is worth remembering that an answer remains a hypothesis until experience has tested it.

In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.

Where the Gate Sits

  • Center: Ajna.
  • I Ching hexagram: hexagram 4, Meng.
  • Position on the wheel: from 18°52′30″ Leo to 24°30′ Leo.
  • The Sun in Gate 4: roughly from August 11 to 17 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
  • Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 7 comes before it, Gate 29 after it.

The Six Lines of Gate 4

Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 4.4.

  • Line 1: Discipline of the Mind. Answers here are born of diligent study: the person needs a rigorous foundation for their formulas to hold. The trap is turning discipline into a rigid frame with no room left for new thoughts.
  • Line 2: Patience With Slower Minds. The person finds explanations easily and is lenient toward those who understand more slowly. They prefer to think their answers over alone and to share them when asked.
  • Line 3: Not Dazzled by Brilliance. Other people's impressive answers easily carry this person away, and they test them against their own experience. Through mistakes they learn to tell a formula that works from one that merely sounds good.
  • Line 4: Tangled in Explanations. The person readily shares their formulas with their circle of acquaintances. The trap is getting so absorbed in their own constructions that they lose touch with reality, and then honestly revising them is especially hard.
  • Line 5: A Student's Openness. People expect ready answers from this person, but their strength lies in being able to ask and learn without vanity. An honest “I don't know yet” is thought to protect their reputation better than a hasty formula.
  • Line 6: Correcting in Measure. With maturity the person clearly sees where other people's explanations go wrong and can help fix them. It is important to do this in proportion: the aim is to save others from a mistake, not to prove they are right.

Channels

Gate 4 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.

  • Channel 4-63 “Logic” — the partner gate is 63 “Doubt” in the Head Center. The channel gives a mind that notices inconsistencies and looks for patterns. In the system, it is good for testing ideas and forecasts, but it tends toward doubt when turned on your own life.

All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.

An Honest Look at the Method

Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
